Gmanc711 01-06-2005, 01:23 AM I knew SC was going to work Taylor in to his take on Lynch! LOL
Seriously though, I agree Taylor is headed down the same road. He's clearly become a guy the league has their eye on.
It's not a matter of if, but when Taylor lays someone out and draws a substantial fine. When it does happen I wonder if we'll call him a punk or a beast.
Damn I'm starting to think like SC LOL
I defintley agree. Everytime I see him do that Clothsline I just think of that Donnavan Darrius hit on Robert Fergeson. He's gonna get a nice chunk of change taken out of his pocket eventually.
Lynch's hit wasn't as 'dirty' as Darius's was, it was a pretty solid hit except helmet was involved. I don't think it was intentional on Lynch's part, that's the way he plays the game, at 110 mph.
cpayne5 01-06-2005, 09:06 AM I've got an idea, why don't all the players slap a couple flags on their hips so they can just play powderpuff from now on.
BDBohnzie 01-06-2005, 10:26 AM thank you cpayne...my thoughts exactly...
it's amazing how people make a big deal about hits like Lynch's...however, back in the day when there was little to no protection, guys flew around like that all the time. the one example i can think of is Bedarnik laying out Frank Gifford...guys like Butkus and Sam Huff flew around just like Lynch, and we praise them for their efforts...look at how "dirty" the Raiders of the 70s were...yet, nowadays, with state of the art technology and protection, we're concerned for players' safety...which is valid, but not to the point where someone is a punk for doing his job...John Lynch makes one big hit and people are all over him...
these guys don't go game in and game out thinking, "i'm gonna kill someone today" (Kill in the literal sense, not in the war cry adrealine sense)...they know each player has families to support, and lives to lead...
here's the thing...football is a dangerous sport. players go in knowing this...
what's more dangerous than those hits...playing on astroturf...just ask Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin
cpayne5 01-06-2005, 10:31 AM Shoot, Lynch isn't even the most dangerous player on the team. There's a whole UNIT on that team that is coached to do things that routinely end seasons and careers.
What would you guys recommend? No fine for Lynch at all? He did lead with his helmet with isn't legal. Nothing wrong with a hard hit, just keep it clean.
skinsfanthru&thru 01-06-2005, 12:02 PM Can anyone tell me what exactly the hit was, because I didn't see it. And I'm just wondering how it compares to Donovan Darius' clothesline of a couple of weeks ago. Because he was a first time offender and got fined 75K, then shouldn't a four-time offender be fined more?
Lynch launched himself at Dallas Clark helmet first and hit Clark right under the chin strap. I'm pretty sure Lynch even said he hit Clark the way he did to send a message to the Colts, and now the Broncos dbs r talking trash about the colts receivers who torched them for 40+points last year.
All this talk about football being a violent sport and fines like this causing a player not to play at full speed and hit people in similar ways as if the fines are a bad thing? Players have to stop leading with the helmet, because it's becoming far more common instead of using the shoulder or heaven forbid their arms. These fines not only are to discourage the use of spearing and launching for the safety of the receivers but also the defensive players as well. If there isn't a change in the way defensive players, someone is going to die sooner than later during a football game.

The NFL has gotta do what it's gotta do, I guess. But, I think that this is a violent sport and as such, a shroud of contact rules should not be forced upon it to give it a softer appearance. Just let them play football, in the violent way it was intended.
Daseal 01-06-2005, 06:01 PM I understand from time to time you'll have a hit that's not to intentionally hurt someone. Your helmet will hit first if they cut because that's just how you hit.
Lynch was trying to hurt that guy, fine him. Why do we lean towards caution now? Maybe it's because players that used to fly around and play like that are dying at age 43. Maybe that's why.

Why have you developed a habit of asking questions and then answering it with the next sentence? I just don't know.
Lynch wasn't trying to hurt the guy, that's just plain rediculous. He was playing football the way he's been taught and coached all his life (all out).
It's a bit more than leaning towards caution at this point. It's not the hitting that puts these guys' bodies in such a sad state at early ages; a lot of the time its the time spent in the weight room that does this.
