I'll second that detractor statement. I wasn't on Newton's bandwagon at all, especially after his horrible preseason, and true this is one game, but 422 yards and 3 combined touchdowns is impressive, and is only made more impressive that he's a rookie making his first career start. Kudos to him. It remains to be seen if he will be consistent week to week but he certainly couldn't have gotten off to a better start.

Because Newton can stand in the pocket and throw the football with bodies around him, he's an offensive coordinator's dream. And he's going to be just fine in this league.
I don't know if this particular performance is anything special -- I mean 400 yards is a lot of them, but if the debut record was held by say, Ryan Leaf, what would it mean then? Vince Young went 8-5 as a rookie, and it didn't get him anywhere. Newton still has a major learning curve and is going to struggle a lot as a rookie. But Newton was a pass-first guy going back to college, and even without the read option to devastate a college defense, he's still an imposing figure to have to defend.
The Panthers are going to win a bunch of games this year with Newton at quarterback. But you need to consider how good their defense is.

Great performance by Newton on Sunday, but not ready to annoint Newton yet. Let's see how he's doing in Week 6 once there's some good tape on him out there and DCs have a chance to adjust to him.
I think it's very ironic that the player the Panthers should've taken IMO wound up making the play to beat them.

I definitely did not expect those types of numbers from Newton. Granted it's a very so-so defense in AZ(great news for us) it is still tough to throw the ball around like that on your debut.

And I'll eat some of that crow with him. For Newton to go 24-37 and 422, 2 td's one rushing. I don't care if it's Az. It was on the road and it's the guy's first start. You just don't see rookies doing that. The guy was simply bad ass.
And that's why he will probably win ROW, and not Kerrigan!

Congratulations to the rookie, I like to see good young Qbs coming into the league. If he can be a good NFL Qb then I need to eat some serious crow, as I was certainly one who did not think he could do it.
That being sad....mad props??? what year is this? I think I am going to start a thread with the title: Rex Grossman is going to win MVP.....NOT!!!!

For the record...I always liked Cam coming out of college and stumped for him to be in B&G if he made it to #10! Ahhhh....vindication (at least for a week)?
BTW- New Guy. Stop cursing and write like an adult. NOT COOL!

Yeah but that's to be expected. A rookie qb playing his first career game and scoring 3 touchdowns and throwing for 422 yards against a rookie OLB who had a pick 6? No contest. I'll still vote for Kerrigan but if you look at it without burgundy colored glasses it's obvious who wins that.
