Sheriff Gonna Getcha 12-31-2004, 01:41 PM Turf toe can hamper someone for awhile, but I don't think it's a catastrophic injury that one cannot recover from. It took Shockey over a full season for him to say he shook it off. I don't think this is the sort of injury we'll need to consult medical experts about.
As I have tirelessly said, is there anyone here who can honestly say that the playcalling was very good? Is there anyone here who can honestly say that the run-blocking was good? Is there anyone here who can honestly say that wideouts should catch the ball behind the line of scrimmage (as they did here this season 50% of the time) and run the ball 40 yards to a score?
The only guy that I know could get great yac and score on the types of catches of wideouts were getting is Terrell Owens. I'd rather kill my mother before I'd ask for TO to come here to D.C.
So, I just think our WRs are getting a raw deal here, someone isn't watching the games when they say our wideouts don't have good ypc or TD stats, and I think Gibbs' playbook is made of teflon because people will blame Saddam Hussein for our troubles before they look at Gibbs.
PS-I think I'm going to change my signature to read like this:
"DISCLAIMER: This writer disavows any claim that he doesn't believe that Gibbs can turn the Redskins franchise around. This writer WAS old enough to remember Gibbs' first tenure. This writer does have faith that Gibbs' playcalling WILL be good."
skins009 12-31-2004, 02:40 PM As most people know, I do not believe our offensive roster needs help, other than on the offensive line. Here's why:
1). Gibbs' offense relies on running the ball, not passing it.
2). Our run-blocking stunk this year.
3). Mike Williams, a rookie who doesn't play QB, will likely cost $45 million and a $16 million signing bonus.
4). How many wideouts get TDs and big gains on 5 yard curls, hitches, and flanker screens?
Gibbs needs another year in the NFL to get acclimated and use his genius. Our wideouts did a good job this year (despite what everyone else says). Gibbs didn't know how to use them, Portis or Ramsey. Give him a year and he'll do wonders. Look what Gregg Williams did for the defense with a bunch of no-names. Don't you have faith he can do the same with even more talent than we have of defense?
We don't need dismantled O-lines, WR corps, or simply offenses as a whole. To me playcalling is as much to blame for our offensive troubles as anything. Just as it took Gibbs 10 weeks to realize Brunell wasn't the answer, I think it will take him another 10 weeks to realize that those hitches, flanker screens and curls are making opposing defenses look great, our offense like crap, and our wideouts like sh-t as well. Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon (who was a guest on the Tony Kornheiser show) both said as much on the radio a few days ago. These guys certainly remember what Gibbs did and of all the experts in the media, I trust them the most.
That is why I don't want to see a Snyder-esque offseason. Bring the same ol' guys back and make 1 or 2 changes. We need to show the locker room that we have FAITH in them, that this isn't going to be an offseason where we revamp the offense and talk a lot about how we're going to be a powerhouse.
This should be a differently run Redskins operation. These players have been with Spurrier (who we all agree ran a crappy offense) and now Gibbs (who ran a crappy offense after a 12 year hiatus). These guys have been faced with constant change, bad coaching, coaches learning about the modern NFL on the job, and now you want to get rid of them?
These are our Redskins, they're what we've got. We can win with them.....I KNOW THAT (God told me :) ). We don't need a bunch of change. With a new center and tight end, and another year for Gibbs to study game-tape our offense could be devastating.
I agree with everything you just said. WR aren't the problem its the routes and system there playing in. Keep the same group together with a strong draft class and this team will win games next year.
Drift Reality 12-31-2004, 05:10 PM IF jacobs has looked so awesome in practice why hasn't Gibbs played him?
Because a lot of people look good in practice - but Gibbs is simply known for sticking with his starters and having faith in them - probably excessive faith in some situations - remember a guy named Brunell?
Shane 01-01-2005, 12:48 AM Laveranues Coles is a serious problem. He has been playing at not nearly the level he was before his toe injury a couple of years ago. He didn't get it operated on in the offseason; apparently he was advised it would get better just through rest. It apparently didn't. Now it comes out in today's Post that Coles doesn't want to get it operated on this offseason.
If I am the Redskins, I tell Coles he doesn't have a choice in this - get it operated on or go on the trading block immediately. We cannot afford to go into another season with Coles as the #1 receiver limping around - for the third year in a row.
Taylor Jacobs - I would look to make him a starter next year if he plays his way into it in training camp. He provides spark and I like what I have seen and heard about him.
Rod Gardner - goodbye, and good luck to you. I had high hopes for you but like Trevor says, I am through with waiting for you to become consistent. We can't afford to wait for you anymore. I would trade him for whatever we can get.
Darnerian McCants - I don't know why the coaches don't seem very high on you, but it doesn't seem to be happening here, and if it ever was going to, you would think it would have happened by now. I would look to trade McCants, and if a decent offer is not forthcoming, let him compete one more time in training camp.
Mike Williams - if he is available, I would sure look to draft him. We need spark with our receivers and he would look good opposite Taylor Jacobs.
If we jettison Coles, Gardner and McCants, we will obviously need to bring in other players besides Williams, through free agency to get some experience and maybe another player in the draft as well. James Thrash can play more as well and I am sure he would contribute very well if called upon.
BossHog 01-01-2005, 06:48 PM We just have to play the hand we've been 'dealt'. Gardner is out. McCants should strive as a possession reciever. Jacobs, Coles, and Thrash can get open and if need be, go deep. Whatever Gibbs sees 'wrong' at practice he needs to correct it. Pencil Jacobs and/or McCants in starting roles and coach 'em up. Should we draft a WR in the upcoming draft? Yes. Is that top priortiy? No. You know how we are when it comes to Snyder and free agency. We may get a guy that way.
monk81 01-02-2005, 02:22 PM Gardner has been a virtual no show when he wasn't dropping passes he had a stupid penalty...........Coles played hard and hurt and will be even better once healthy..worth every penny paid....Thrashes play in the last game said it all. Thrash isn't flashy just a reliable good hands guy with a great worth ethic. I can see us cutting Gardner and drafting a WR in the later rounds.........DE and O line being higher priorties in the draft.......
SmootSmack 01-03-2005, 02:09 AM You guys think we're going to hold onto Antonio Brown as our KR? Would that be another WR spot taken then?
I'd like to see Jacobs be a bigger part of this offense. And McCants as well. Hope Coles gets healthy also
Redskins8588 01-03-2005, 02:21 AM Did anyone notice that we went 4 wide today? I dont see us cutting Gardner, rather I see us try to trade him away atleast that way we can get a draft pick for him. Which would be much better than not getting nothing at all.
offiss 01-03-2005, 02:31 AM We can forget about William's now that we are picking 11th, if he look's like he could be the kind of reciever people believe he can be he will be gone in the top 7, we have to cut bait with Gardner I don't care how cap friendly his salary is get rid of him he's a waste of space and retarding the growth of player's like Jacob's, we will have to try and find a WR in the second or 3rd round's and hope we get lucky.
