After hearing a few of my friends rave about it constantly it got me interested, so after spending a few days reading everything I possibly could on the internet about these things I plunked down my $$ and ordered the 40GB model from the apple store last night.
The idea of being able to carry my entire CD collection (over 300 CD's) in my pocket is what really hooked me.
Who else has an ipod? Let me know how you like it.

I've had an iRiver H120 for about a year. Got it for the same reason you want the iPod. Have over 10,000 songs (at 128 bitrate) on it from my disk collection. I liked the iRiver a little better than the iPod at the time and it hasn't disappointed.

My friends are raving about it, and I'm really putting thought into getting myself one. How much did that set you back, Matty?

That's the only bad part, about $390. They offer a $30 education discount for students, so that took care of the tax at least.

I found a promotion code for a Dell DJ (15 gig model). So I got one for my girlfriend for Christmas. I paid $135 including shipping/ tax. That model has been replaced by the Pocket DJ (or whatever they call it). She loves it. I had already hooked up an auxillary line up to her Jeep's head unit for XM, so she can plug up her DJ too and not have to fumble around w/ CDs. The one thing that the IPod does that I wish the Dell DJ did is the ability to act as an external hard drive w/out any extra software. I know someone who bought an Ipod for the sole purpose of loading a remote bootable Linux install from it. I think he has 5 songs on it just for the sake of saying he actually does have music on it too.
Here some good 3rd party software for the popular music players. I bought it for the DJ and its nice not having to use the over-bloated software the vendors try to force you to use.

I'll have to check out that software, so it basically replaces itunes?

Is it true that you can only play iTunes music on iPod or is that the other way around?

I think that's the way it works, if you purchase music from itunes the ipod is the only music player it will work on.

Ahhh OK... so could I load my other non-iTunes MP3s on there? I want one of those iPod Shuffles. Great price.
Yes MP3's work fine, it supports a couple of other formats too
