sportscurmudgeon 12-30-2004, 03:59 PM Coles is a good receiver but is overpaid and is not a great #1 WR. Yes I know he catches 90 passes and has 1200 yards and that's nice.
Now go and dig up the stats on his TD catches as a Redskin...
Lead receivers catch lots of passes and they make others look good AND THEY GET INTO THE END ZONE more than once every three or four games!!
A top flight WR - one who is getting paid what Coles is getting paid or maybe a bit more - scores touchdowns. Compare scoring stats for Coles, Moss, Owens, Harrison, Horn, Chad Johnson over the past three years. Compare him to Charles Johnson over the past two years (Johnson was not in the NFL 3 years ago) and Javon Walker over the past two years. Hell, compare him to Jimmy smith over the past three years even though Smith has been out all this season!
celts32 12-30-2004, 04:08 PM I will try to answer a couple posts at once in regards to my assessment of Coles. I do watch every second of every Redskins game. I have noticed his production increase with Ramsey at QB, but it is still not up to the production of a #1 WR IMO. Where are the big plays and TD's? He has caught more and dropped less since Ramsey took over, that I will accept as a good point, but he is still not making the game changing plays that I expect from my #1 WR. I guess we could argue all day as to which is more to blame the WR's or the QB play. I think Coles is a good player, just not a difference maker that I thought he would be and that his contract says he should be.
I will retract the "trainwreck" comment...that was not fair or accurate. And I am also not trying to imply that we should get rid of Coles. I am not one of those overreacting fans that want to ship every player off the team. I think he can be one of the better #2's in the league. I just don't see him as a top WR on a playoff caliber team. I measure a WR not by the catches and yards accumulated, but rather by the impact he has on the offense and the games outcome. How much impact can Coles 90 catches have had if Redskins are one of the lowest scoring teams in the league?

You compare him to guys playing with MUCH better QBs but fail to mention that. You compare him to guys who make twice as much as him, but conveniently fail to mention that. You are simply WRONG about Javon Walker's stats. Please do compare him to Jimmy Smith. And just who exactly is Charles Johnson? I have a friend named Charles Johnson, but I don't think he plays in the NFL.
I know your whole gig is to be the skeptical, everything and everyone sucks, demolish the whole team guy, but there are TONS of people who'd kill to have Coles on their team. Coles is one of the few Redskins I get very defensive about. Don't trash this guy because once you do, your stock is going to drop a bunch.
Daseal 12-30-2004, 08:58 PM OKay, Ramseyfan:
28 Laveranues Coles WAS 87 913 10.5 1 45
11 Jimmy Smith JAC 71 1150 16.2 6 65
Jimmy Smith has more yards and 5 more TDs.
3 Javon Walker GB 86 1300 15.1 11 79
Javon Walker - same things.
I'm assuming SC meant Andre Johnson, who's right behind Jimmy Smith but with only 6 TDs, still overshadowing Coles 1.
There are #2 receivers (Burleson, Lelie, Stokely, Mason, Wayne, Driver, Bruce) all ahead of Coles. He has a passion and a fire which I love, but he is far from a big play receiver. He had good hands and excellent speed a majority of the time. He's hampered by injuries and a horrible system, no doubt. However if we talk about production this year - he simply doesn't have any.
Big C 12-30-2004, 09:30 PM daesal, how many times have we thrown deep? thats how u get yards...dont blame coles
Daseal 12-30-2004, 09:35 PM He's hampered by injuries and a horrible system, no doubt. However if we talk about production this year - he simply doesn't have any.
He's a good guy, but I also am not sure if he's a true clutch #1 receiver. He's a good receiver, but I'd like a big guy on the other side of him.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 12-30-2004, 09:36 PM Javon Walker DIDN'T have those yards last year - that's what I was responding to.
Just so you know, Mason is a #1.
Bruce is paid a bunch more than Coles.
Stokley has Peyton Manning, Burleson has Daunte Culpepper, Driver and Walker have Brett Favre, whereas Coles had Brunell through 9 weeks. Did you consider that?
I can't believe the stuff that is coming out people's mouths about Coles. All of you were talking all this trash last year about how great Coles is. Now, they wanna turn over the roster like Daniel Snyder. Fairweather fans ain't fans.
Coles has been a productive WR in every system he's played in. This year he's been hampered by injury, poor QB play and an offense that hasn't been able to stretch the field. Even with all those factors working against him he's on pace to snag 90+ balls, granted the TD's aren't there but since when are TD's the main category we judge WR's on?? Monk was never a high TD guy, do we question his accomplishments?
Coles has never been a big TD guy, but I believe that's due to the way he's used more than his inability to find paydirt. Under Spurrier he was used as a decoy in the redzone and we saw McCants benefit from that. Because McCants had 6 TD's last year does that make him a star? I guess it does if TD's are the most important stat some of you guys are looking at.
Coles is the last thing we need to be concerned about when it comes to shaping our WR corps. for next season.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 12-31-2004, 01:09 PM Matty,
Thank you. I can understand why people want Mike Williams to replace Gardner. I just don't want to hear any criticism of Coles. Picking up Coles was the 2nd best decision Danny's ever made (#1 is getting Gibbs back).
Daseal 12-31-2004, 01:16 PM Ramseyfan - Both Mason and Bennett have more yards/TDs than coles. Mason is the #1 as far as Volek is concerned, and that's who got a majority of the yards/TDs this year.
Coles is a good receiver, but if you ask anyone around the league to name a big time receiver, no one will mention Coles. Moss, Johnson, TO, Holt, Harrison are the big names. Coles needs surgery, we need him healthy. I certainly don't want him going anywhere because I love the guy, but stat's are stats. Bruce and Holt have Chris Chandler throwing to them for the last 5 weeks - did you consider that? Every team goes through ups and downs and injuries, it's hard to use them as an excuse (obviously a receivers injury means he won't get the #s, but I mean as far as the team around them)
Coles is a great guy and a solid receiver, but I still think we need a big guy on the other side. A real clutch go-to guy in tight spots. Coles doesn't have the size to be a great receiver in the Redzone.
