Brock Lesnar backs out of UFC 131; suffers from diverticulitis once again - National Pro Wrestling | Examiner.com (http://www.examiner.com/pro-wrestling-in-national/brock-lesnar-backs-out-of-ufc-131-suffers-from-diverticulitis-once-again)

Brock Lesnar is battling diverticulitis again, the same illness that almost led to his retirement from the UFC in 2009. As a result, he has been forced to withdraw from his fight against Junior Dos Santos at UFC 131 in June.

Lesnar maintains that he's not retiring, but does say that he has to either decide to live with the lifelong pain and other complications from diverticulitis, or undergo "life changing surgery". (Which i am assuming is a colostomy of some sort, based on what i've read about the condition).

Best luck to lesnar, I dont like him, but its sad to see any athlete trying to come to grips that their career is over, whether they know it or not.

I was talking to my cousin who is a trainer about this this morning, and he said that while Lesnar may never "officially retire", it will be extremely difficult for him to get cleared to fight while having diverticulitis, and if he does indeed have to get a colostomy or something related, the chances of him actively competing again are slim to none.

My personal thoughts say that Brock will be out for a while, he will get his condition under control to some degree, and maybe be able to get one last fight in a state that has less strict licensing requirements, if Brock is hell bent on fighting again and allows him to end his career in pride and most likely go out with a win.

Isnt it alluded to or speculated Chris Horton might have diverticulitis?

I dont really like MMA but obvisouly hes a household name in the sport. Hope he can come back .

Dont know about Chris Horton.

What i've read on diverticulitis is that patients often try intensive medication to try and battle the disease. Apparantley it never really heals, and the side effects really can affect major organs, specifically your liver and spleen can become enlarged from the medicine, so that eliminates contact/combat sports. Thats why Brock would likely not get a license, and the UFC wouldnt keep him around as that kind of a liability if he were to suffered ruptured organs during a fight.

People bring up the issue of fighting in a state that requires no licensing (West Virginia, Wyoming, and a few others come to mind), but i dont see Brock fighting for a cheap promotion and possibly risking his life just to compete, but i guess thats his call to make. I just dont see a world-class athlete resorting to those type of low measures.

Surely if Brock wants to stay in MMA and competing is out of the question, i'm sure the UFC could give him a job as a trainer or coach of some kind.

I'd also have to think competing is out if he has to get a colostomy....
