Patrick Ramsey

First of all, I said a few times that I think that Patrick Ramsey gets nervous out there and that that accounts for some of his mistakes. On further reflection, it’s not fair of me to make that criticism and it was unkind of me to call him “Nervous Pat” as I did, and I apologize to Patrick if he happens by any chance to read this site.

Patrick has as everyone knows shown great courage standing in there against pressure despite taking a severe beating under the pass protection schemes of the Spurrier era. When you are learning a new system, you may miss some open receivers sometimes because the system isn’t instinctively a part of your thinking yet and you don’t therefore see the whole field. That is only natural.

Ramsey is developing well especially considering his overall experience as a quarterback, and the fact that he has had to start over this year with an entirely new scheme.

I do believe that there should be an open competition in training camp next year rather than anointing Patrick the quarterback, and I think that such a challenge might well inspire everyone involved to higher levels of play.

However, I trust the coaching staff to make the best decision in that regard.

I for one think he has progressed really well from last year and the year before. He is no longer a scare crow who just stands there. He is moving very nicely in the pocket now. I like what I have seen from him so far but there is still a lot of room for improvement. He isn't making decisions quickly and he isn't seeing the whole field. What he really needs to do is go to one of those camps where they teach you how to move well (sort of like that commercial with McNabb). He should probably try and practice with is receivers more often. Get in a little extra reps with them (ala Manning/Harrison).

I think that one of the coolest things to see is pat's pocket presence. he eludes blitzers and would be tacklers with alot more ease and skill. He steps into the pocket with confidence now, and he sidesteps alot better....


I think that he needs confidence, and to get that up, we need to make him the starter. there is no way that Brunell should get another shot, not after NINE GAMES!! To bring in another QB would just be going back to the freakin inconsistency that this team has had....Name pat the starter, give him his due, and build up his confidence, and with this Defense, he could easily throw 18-22 TD's next year with 10-12 Int's! I say 22-12....

Actually he's a regular at Peyton Manning's offseason camp.

Here's my quick and dirty assessment of him.

-He's done a 180 from the Ramsey we saw this preseason. I knew he was going to take some time to adjust to a new system but honestly I was concerned with his poor showing in the preseason and in to the regular season with his brief appearance against the Giants.

-I've been impressed with his adjustment to a radically different system. He's shown to me that he can throw with accuracy and he's capable of directing an offense that requires smart decisions while minimizing mistakes.

-The only thing he needs right now in my opinion is time and experience.

-I think he's a QB we can win with, whether or not we give him that chance is another story. Personally I hope we stick it out with him.

Gibbs just thought he wouldn't have to teach Brunell as much during the season. he didn't want to deal with someone he figured he'd have to teach from scratch.

so good seeing those lasers again.

Am I missing something? Based on his performance, Gibbs statements of support and the fact that, under his contract, he is a bargain in 2005, I thought it was a given that he would be returning next year as the starter.

Has Joe said something in the last couple days that I missed??

i would be scared to stand in the pocket too if i had played quarterback in spurrier 2004's offense

Having finally been able to see 2 straight Skins games over here, I'd say this: Ramsey has shown to me he can move in the pocket and drill the ball in there. With Gardners 39 yarder, he also showed touch (though WTF was he and Coles doing so close together?). He's also shown smarts against the 49ers in not throwing picks when there's nobody open (except that one play against the 49ers where he had enough time to throw it away and took the sack).

However, in the Eagles game he again showed that when the pressure is really on he makes mistakes too easily. He also showed against the 49ers, that he still needs to read defenses better - the 3rd down PA against a 3 man blitz was a classis example. In that instance, he should have seen that at least one man was coming on the blitz and audibled out of PA or called a TO.

The difference with these kinds of errors is they can be coached out of him, or he'll learn the lessons from his mistakes. Overall he is much improved over the last 3-4 games and is also showing some leadership, not to mention his rapport with Cooley. I read the post game Q&A and he wasn't afraid to critique his and the entire O's play, without being derogatory or personal.

Next season, Brunell should be the #2 and should teach Ramsey all he can. Once Ramsey has full confidence in the O, confidence in himself and knows how to avoid the dumb mistakes, he can be a very good QB. I don't think he'll ever be up to Mannings level, but we've won SB's here before without 'star' QB's.

Absent some major offseason move to bring in yet another QB to this team - one that I really do NOT want to see unless that QB is named Peyton Manning - Patrick Ramsey should be the starting QB next year. He has earned it not by being tough or anything like that; he earned it by playing better than Brunell. And that is what QB competition is all about.

Someone said it was never a question of whether or not Ramsey was smart enough, tough enough or talented enough. I'll agree with the last two; his courage and his arm were never much in doubt. But the confusion and the ineptitude that he showed in the pre-season and in the 1st Giants game when he came in in relief of Brunell told me he might just not be smart enough. He has progressed nicely; his "bad decisions" - translation: blockheaded plays - are far fewer now than they were a month ago. All signs are headed in the right direction and he should be the QB next year.

But I'm still not ready to anoint him as "great" just yet...
