A 1 year wonder IMONewton is Sanchez from a different system. Physically, he may be the best athlete I've ever seen, and he can play quarterback at the next level if he wants to. He has a compact release and throws accurately to the edges. But NFL defenses are going to confuse the crap out of Cam Newton (much like Sanchez), since half his college experience came at the JUCO level. Newton's NFL prospects are long and full of love/hate. Compares favorably to Jake Locker, whose career will be very short and full of erratic passes. I would draft Pat Devlin before him, although they are not at all the same quarterback. Devlin hardly ever goes down the field at Delaware. Newton goes down the field all the time at Auburn. What they have in common is that are the two most accurate passers in the draft. Bucket 01-08-2011, 03:02 PM Even though I would be happy with Quinn at #10. I really think we need to trade down, and try to feel some more gaps on our Oline, and defense then going after 1 big time player early.. Dirtbag59 01-08-2011, 03:54 PM THANK YOU!!!!! You win in the trenches!!!!!! That saying might be overstated. It's no doubt important but you see teams all over the league with average to decent lines and great QB's going deep into the playoffs year after year (Bears, Chiefs, Eagles, Colts, ~Seahawks, Falcons, Steelers, Packers). While the teams with great lines like the 49ers and Browns sit at home and watch the playoffs after sub .500 seasons. Heck even we had a great line in the middle part of the previous decade and yet the best we did was get to the second round of the playoffs. Either way Smoot hit home the main point. We don't need to spend a first round pick every year to rebuild our offensive line and even though Shanahan has traditionally done it with second day picks the fact of the matter is that we'll probably see as many as 2 major free agents come in here to play on the offensive line. Davin Joesph seems like the most likely candidate. Honestly though if we were to use a first round pick in the trenches I would much rather go for someone on the front 5 of our defense as those guys don't usually last on draft day. Zone blocking offensive lineman on the other hand frequently slip through the cracks, mainly because they're viewed as undersized. jsarno 01-08-2011, 04:21 PM Cam Newton is NOT our answer. Trade down! We need more picks, and there are plenty of good olinemen to be had later in the draft. I'd like to see us trade for Tebow, but I understand that's a pipe dream. We aren't going to be contenders next year (if there is one) and Tebow is the type that will need a full season before he truly gets it. DiehardSkiNfan 01-08-2011, 09:42 PM ahh if we get Quinn i'll be the happiest fan ever! SS i'm new to the forum do u have an inside connection to the management of the Skins? Mann if we get Quin!! with Orakpo... don't forget guys.. we still have our 2nd rounder, another 4th rounder for Campbell this year... and then obviously our 3rd to.. so we can get quality players those rounds but we need the BEST player available on the board, for that high of a pick.. I think we need to get our defense stronger in this draft because our D is getting old.. Fletcher will probably retire in a year or 2.. and i've been hearing Mcintosh won't be back next year.. we're already down a strong LB.. if we can manage to get Quinn.. he's suppose to be top 5 pick and has comparisons of Demarcus Ware and Patrick Willis.. Put him on our D and with Orakpo.. opposiing teams offenses will be running for ther lives!! We can get Tyrod Taylor in 2nd rd if we need a stud QB.. and O-line in FA with WR in the FA... and try to get a stud RB?? what u guys think.. I have inside connections (though not as strong as they used to be) through more than a decade of working in sports media. So I'm able to provide info here, I'd say maybe 70-80% of the time I'm correct. Things change. Sometimes I'm wrong. It happens Landry44 01-09-2011, 12:03 AM do we take newton if he is on the board? i would hate to have passed on him, unless it meant taking mallett. i think we get our quarterback and worry about everything else while we groom him. once hes ready to play in a year, we have a team around him ready to roll. I know it's going to be a lot of people who disagree with me but I think Cameron Newton should be our pick. This kid has great size, a great arm, great accuracy, and great mobility. The only thing he doesn't have is a lot of experience. If we draft him we will have to let him sit on the bench for a year or maybe two so he can develop. If he we can get this kid to play up to his potential he will lead this team to the playoffs year in and year out. Lotus 01-09-2011, 12:17 AM That saying might be overstated. I agree completely about the OL, especially since we need interior OL, not so much tackles. #10 is high to pick a guard or center. A NT would be great but methinks none this year are worth a #10 pick. Therefore I think we might get the most bang for our buck by drafting an OLB like Quinn or Miller to rush opposite Orakpo. We could get our own Harrison/Woodley thing going. If by some magic Fairley fell to us at DE, he'd be a good choice, too. r08kessl 01-09-2011, 12:58 AM I know it's going to be a lot of people who disagree with me but I think Cameron Newton should be our pick. From what I've read he's a winner, a leader, he loves to play football, and he has a great overall mentality. |
