Can't blame Gray. It's one thing to simply jump ship but Gray was offered twice as much money and a promotion from position coach in college to defensive coordinator int he NFL.

Go Jerry Gray!
He should have been promoted by the Redskins and Shanahan instead of hiring Haslett as DC.

Yes, I wonder about Haslett. Can anyone that knows about these things tell me -- was our defense SO BAD simply because of the wrong players for the 3-4 defense, or was Haslett also bad at calling our defense?
I understand we'd drop in rankings given the switch to 3-4 and the lack of a good NT, but really - the second worst defense in the league??

I personally blame it on the 3-4 defense. We just didn't have the personnel for it. Just don't understand why they couldn't wait a season to implement it. They could've ran a base 4-3 with occasional 3-4 looks. Sure they threw a couple of 4-3 formations, but they spent the whole offseason learning the 3-4.

I was not fascinated with the Haslett pick but I can't blame him for the defenses issues. I think almost everyone could see a good part of the problem was personel not fitting the 3-4. As far as using both the 4-3 and 3-4 scheme, you have to keep in mind it was Shanahan who was enamored with the 3-4 and studied it during his year off looking at both the Steelers and Patriots. I think part of the reason Haslett was picked was because he helped to implement the Steelers 3-4 defense while he was there so he should have a basic understanding of how it works.
When Haslett left the Steelers and had his two HCing stints I think he used the 4-3 scheme and honestly I don't think it worked out for him. Maybe it was whoever he had as the DC but they declined each year stats wise. I'm still holding out hope Haslett can get this team playing like the Steelers.
