d151b 12-05-2004, 01:34 PM Oh you HAVE to be kidding me.....
Just because their out of conference schedule isnt as tough dosent mean their in conference is. They played a MUCH tougher schedule than the other two.
that's your opinion but the facts don't back that up gman...
Daseal 12-05-2004, 01:35 PM I agree, d151b, Texas is getting screwed. It looks like Utah might too. I think the top 8 teams should go to a play-off system.
Gmanc711 12-05-2004, 01:36 PM 10-9 against lsu was a sound thumping indeed ;-) if you look at auburn's opponents combined win loss record is way below what usc and oklahoma played. i think they have an arguement but not much of one. if someone wants to talk about how the bcs is flawed why don't you mention how texas who's only loss was against the #2 ranked team in the nation, might be left out of a bcs bowl game. now that's just plain criminal. i really feel for the ut fans, but maybe they'll jump cal this week, who knows?
So what if they jump cal? Then Cal gets f*cked. Their only loss was against the NUMBER 1 team in the nation, and they might get let out. The only thing wrong with the BCS is that it dosent crown a national champion. Somoene tell me any sport, at any level from Pee-Wee to Senior, where you can win every single time you play... and not be the champion. Its rediculous.
Btw... USC barley beat Va Tech and Barley beat Oregon St and Barley Beat Cal
Oklahoma Barley beat Texas, and Barley beat Texas A&M and Barley beat Oklahoma St.
VEEEEEEEEERY interesting.
Gmanc711 12-05-2004, 01:49 PM This is where the problem lies. There is no other sport where this is a conversation. If anyone cries about not being in the title game, you can just tell them " win all your games". Obviously we'll just have to agree to disagree. Just like I thought USC was the best team last season, I think Auburn is this season. I feel cheated as a College Football fan.
itvnetop 12-05-2004, 07:17 PM this system is flawed... even though my team benefits this year, i still hate the bcs. it's a sham when a conference champ that goes undefeated in its conference can't play in the dance.
but au fans shouldn't slam either sc or ou... it is the system's fault, not theirs. both teams did what they had to do. defending my boys, yes we did have a few close games this year. but we were the no. 1 target each and every game as preseason number one, regular season number one, and now end-of-season number one. as the number one team in the nation, you are the opponent's super bowl of the year. so we have a few games where the score is way closer than you'd like- who doesn't in college football?
we beat va-tech in basically their house (if you were at the game like i was, you know it was a home game). many considered the acc the strongest conference in the country before the year started. we beat cal, who was jobbed outta the bcs as well. not blaming texas, but if cal lost out b/c of a close win against southern miss., then what about texas against kansas? both teams in the orange bowl have beaten one bcs bowl team... if it was switched between cal and texas, sc would have been the only team in the nation to beat TWO bcs bowl teams this season. say what you want about close wins, that is amazing.
besides- coaches, not just ap writers, must be on to something. having said that, if we played like we did against ucla, ou will spank us january 4th.
Daseal 12-05-2004, 07:30 PM Then when Auburn beats whoevers ass in their bowl they should be considered a co-national champion.
itvnetop 12-05-2004, 07:44 PM no- the winner of the ap ballot will be the same winner of the bcs orange bowl game this year. last year, the winner of the ap ballot was not playing in the bcs sugar bowl. in fact, the winner of the ap ballot was also the winner of the coaches ballot before the coaches all were forced to vote to the sugar bowl winner. the split vote doesn't happen this year b/c auburn is 3 in the ap (not to mention the coaches).
Gmanc711 12-05-2004, 08:06 PM Then when Auburn beats whoevers ass in their bowl they should be considered a co-national champion.
Absolutley should be, but they wont. Its ashame too. Iventop is right though, I'm really rooting for Auburn, but I cant say that OU or USC dosent deserve to be there either , because they do. Its impossible to defend this system though. Its so flawed its unbeliveable. There are a ton of teams that got the screw job this year.
Daseal 12-05-2004, 08:24 PM I agree Gmac. I think if the top 8 teams go to the playoffs we'll see something great. Don't use exams on these kids. 90% of the time it'll be football farm programs going into these games. Those kids don't take exams. If it's that big of a problem, delay it for one more week.
sportscurmudgeon 12-08-2004, 10:57 PM College teams have NO control over their conference schudules; those are set up by the conferences years in advance. USC plays a pre-set PAC-10 schedule; Auburn playes a pre-set SEC schedule.
EVERY college team has TOTAL control over their "out of conference schedule" USC played VA Tech and Notre Dame. If you want to argue that these are not the best teams in the country, fine. I'll even agree with you there.
However Auburn CHOSE to have its out of conference schedule consist of:
Louisiana-Monroe,
Louisiana Tech and
The Citadel.
Now if anyone wants to say that ANY ONE of Auburn's chosen opponents is tougher than Va Tech AND/OR Notre Dame, then I really don't think it's worth much time and effort trying to explain to you what a good football team is...
Having said that, the BCS is awful and needs to be scrapped in favor of a playoff system/tournament. But until that happens, live with the BCS because if it was just the writers' poll and the coaches' poll as it was in years past, Auburn would be on the outside looking in there too.
