redsk1 01-19-2011, 02:55 PM "Washington RedskinsRecord: 6-10* Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
A gifted athlete, Newton has good arm strength and size, has developing accuracy and continues to show that the more you ask him as a passer, the more he'll develop. This spot might be a bit high based on his current grade in the eyes of scouts, but Newton's skill-set is such that personnel people are going to become more enamored, if they already aren't. Newton has character questions that need to be answered, but the Redskins have a long-term need at this position and the prospect of developing Newton is a tantalizing one."
I feel like Cam Newton has bust written all over him.
I'll defer to Shanahan on this one. He's different than JC. Most, if not all the scouts weren't high on JC. They didn't feel he was 1st round material. They thought he had a chance to be an ok NFL qb, but he was a major project. Most scouts are fairly high on Cam. I haven't really seen him all that much but seems to have some pretty good passing skills. Not saying we should pick him but if MS see something I'm ok w/ it.
He saw something in Jay Cutler and he's pretty good and getting better.
warriorzpath 01-19-2011, 06:03 PM Ok, here's my take of redskins priorities for the draft, 1st and 2nd round.
1. Quarterback - only if Shanahan can find a quarterback to bet his career on it because that's what he'll be doing.
2. Linebacker (outside/inside) - I understand the popular thinking with prioritizing the line of scrimmage on both offense and defense, which is why linebacker is one of my highest priority in a 3-4 defense. In addition to exerting control on the line of scrimmage, a 3-4 linebacker has the most defensive responsibilities and is the position that the 3-4 defense is centralized on (hence 4 versus 3 linebackers).
3. Guard - while this position should only be addressed in the 2nd round, this should be a redskins priority in the draft rather than in free agency in order to infuse youthful skills and hopefully some future long-term consistency along the offensive line. And while some consider the need to replace Jamal Brown, I believe in the old adage for the offensive line: "only as strong as your weakest link" and Brown is not the weakest.

I agree with this with the exception of #3. I think that drafting a guard in the second round is a reach. Shanny has been able to find good guards in rounds 3-5 in past drafts. I know guard is an area of need, but I would rather address this through free agency.

I really think the only positions that can be counted out in early rounds are kicker & punter. Even then, I recall Chip Lohmiller as a 2nd round pick back in the day & he won a lot of games for us. That was when this team had great personel acquisition & FO mgmt.
With that said, a guard in the top 15 picks would have to be as good or better than Steve Hutchinson, but if the best player on the board is a guard & you know you need 1 or 2, I don't see it as a reach at all. This team just better make sure it isn't wrong on these first 2 picks.
Redskin Jim 01-20-2011, 10:33 AM He's not that impressive. That would be,IMHO, a wasted pick.
Agreed, Locker reeks of Jeff George or Patrick Ramsay futility. All the physical tools for the job but can't get it done for a win.. PASS
EARTHQUAKE2689 01-20-2011, 10:46 AM Please pick Prince Amurakura from NE. He'll be our best CB since Champ.
I'd rather have Patrick Peterson from LSU if we go CB but he'll be long gone.
Chico23231 01-20-2011, 11:42 AM Mel Kiper's 1st Mock Draft is out, has us taking Cam at #10:
2011 NFL Mock Draft: Mel Kiper looks at what could be a wild first round - ESPN (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2011/insider/news/story?page=KiperMockDraft1.0)
I appreciate Mel knowledge and perspective...but his mock drafts usually not close. I think alot of teams blow smoke trying to be deceptive when they give him info...last year he got right only 2 of the 32 first round picks.

Only 2? But he's a genius right?

To me his accuracy isn't a big deal. He's trying to project team needs, player rank, etc
One team, trade, etc can throw off the whole thing
