Fix the offense!

How would you fix the Redskins pathetic offense this offseason? My suggestions would be :

1. Install the shotgun.. Today the QB needs those extra seconds to identify the blitz, set up draws and shovel passes.

2. Run more screen plays. There's no better way (other than blocking) to slow the pass rush than some well timed and executed screens. We tried a few times with Brunell, but everyone knew he couldn't throw it 15 yds on the fly so they were all cheating up. I'd like to see Portis in the open field on some screens.

3. Trade Gardner for picks. Hopefully he'd garner a 2nd and 5th to replace what we've lost. If not, at least a 2nd I'd hope. I think with Jacobs and McCants we are in good shape at WR, even if we end up with a top 5 pick based on our record and can draft Mike Williams out of USC.

4. Sign a free agent center and draft a center. That's easily the weak link in the OL. Samuels has played pretty poorly this year so hopefully he'll realize that he needs to take a pay cut because he won't get top dollar on the free agent market.

5. Like I said in an earlier thread, establish an offensive identity. You can't go one week throwing 2 passes in a half to running your feature back 6 times in an entire game, especially when the deficit is less than 2 TD. That above all needs to be done. If we are going to be a running team, let's spend a majority of the time in camp on getting that right. I f we're a passing team, same thing, put the onus on that. We need to figure out who we are before we can get anywhere.

Two picks for Gardner?

I highly doubt we could even get a 2nd rounder, probably a 3rd at best, and even that may be wishful thinking.

We won't get any trade value from Gardner, we need to draft and bring on the surfeit of talent that Spurrier left us.

gardner will be a free agent after this season, we won't get anything for him, and who'd be dumb enough to trade for him anyhow??

I think you're definitely right about the shotgun offense, it definitely helps give quarterbacks a quicker read on what the defense is doing. It also gives him the ability to see where the blitz is coming from so that he can make better decisions about where to scramble to.

If you look at almost all of the good passing teams these days they almost all utilize the shotgun offense. Changes from one formation, say I form, to shotgun on an audible can really create mismatches depending on the defensive packages and it also helps to spread the field and give the quarterback the ability to make the quick read.

if betts was going to be the feature runner, put CP in at WR, he's the fastest guy on the team... and have rock put the weight back on and become our short yardage guy, test jacobs and mccants as #2s...

you know, having KWII wouldn't be so bad... cooley is a great 3rd rounder, but KWII has much faster feet (hate the attitude etc, and i'd want taylor every time... but it sure would be nice to have both of them).

I agree on the shotgun, i wanted it two weeks ago, but gibbs tried it for like, 1 game in 84 and a snap flew over the QB's head, so he's completely dismissed it :(.

Lining up Portis at WR would be interesting. I dont think we should "move" him to WR, hes a good running back, who just dosent have holes. However, Betts has been running a little better, so if Betts is running well one game, we can use CP at WR. We need to find ways to have our best players on the feild.

i think it'd be interesting at least... and have rock put the weight back on to gut the short yards, and if barrow is back next year, try arrington at DE and keep pierce on the LB corp...
