Give me a break, these guys aren't recruited so they can get an education. They are there to win games so the alumni can feel good and generate money for the school by selling the school brand name. They are nothing more than glorified indentured servants.

They should be paid! At least $500 a month.

These kids have a better opportunity to get an education than anyone else at the school. If they do not seize it.....Oh well, It won't be the last stupid thing they do.
AND they will never be paid. The Universities are not going to pay every player on all teams and eventually that is what would be required.

They don't have a better opportunity to get an education especially when it comes to demanding sports such as college football/basketball. You think practice time, gym time and travel time leave much room for getting an education? These kids practically work full-time, not many students do that. Not to mention the fact that if they quit the team to concentrate on their academics they will lose their scholarships. It's fcking racket is what it is.


How about you pay players whose sport generates money? How about you allow a student athlete to quit the team and keep their free ride?

So what do you do with the Lacrosse Team or the Soccer teams that might win National Championships but don't "generate money" as you say?

They are indeed free to choose which school they want to be indentured servants at. Yes, not all are from poor families, most of them are though. For every Kobe Bryant there are 5 players worse off than LaBron James.

I am sure they have a demanding schedule, but I know there are student athletes that excel both academically and on the field/court. They undoubtedly have at their feet, any manor of tutor and aid that can be had anywhere. It is still their choice to dedicate themselves to it or not. I submit many proably do not get serious as they aspire to go pro (and in their defense who would not think that).
Paying those who generate revenue is one lawsuit from failure.....

LOOOL....so I am to believe that a guy who admitted to selling drugs in street corners, arrested for disorderly conduct, arrested for marijuana possession and suspended by the NFL for violating NFL substance abuse policy has no character flaws that allows him to take money from an agent? He's a god damn liar...I'm pretty sure of it and I am also pretty sure he is protecting his agent.

I am not sure of it. I KNOW it. It's a f*cking fact. That idiot was paid. Own up you asshat Holmes. Half the guys he mentioned confirmed they were paid. Of the other half 3/4 didn't want to comment (code for "I was paid"). The other 3 denied it or begged it off. Of course he was paid. It is laughable that he'd even attempt to deny it.

Here's the deal. The crap with them getting paid isn't going away. You all make very good points about how paying them isn't really ideal. I don't totally agree that they "should" be paid from an ethical standpoint like saden seems to. But from a PRACTICAL standpoint the current system doesn't work and cannot work. The entire college football system is monetized. There is zero chance that the NCAA, NFLPA, or colleges can create a real system that keeps part of said system out of the money. It just can't work from an economic standpoint. Everywhere you look in the system people stand to make money. And the way they make money?... off of procuring and utilizing talent. If they are motivated to make money then they'll be motivated to do whatever they have to do to make that happen. It's simple math. Make all the fairyland arguments you want but at the end of the day, with all the cracking down the NCAA does, players still take the money because there is no reason not to. Agents still pay the money because the rewards greatly outweigh the risks. Colleges and coaches still look the other way because they don't have much choice if they want a competitive program, Nobody is actually motivated to operate contrary to the way the current system currently works. As long as there are huge paydays at the end of the rainbow this is the way the system will be. NCAA might as well figure a way to not demonize the whole thing is my point. Make it legit so it can be at least a little more controlled.

Every kid and every situation is different. Can not paint with a broad brush and expect to make some kind of ground breaking point that will solve all the problems in college sports. The Olympics discovered years ago that the concept of an adult amateur athlete is not realistic and they survived just fine. The amateur rules are impossible to enforce and live by when there is millions of dollars being generated by the game. . For every rule abiding athlete there are 2 Reggie Bush's.
The problem can be found in the definition of the word amateur: one who engages in a pursuit, study, science, or sport as a pastime rather than as a profession. There is the problem. The majority of people that go to college, student or athlete do not go to college as with the intent of making what they are doing there (to learn or play a sport ) and have it be a pastime, they go there with the intention of making it a profession and make money.
The really talented and bright students in college can accept paid internships and research grants, but oh no college sports athlete can not make a dime off of their talent. It is breaking the rules. Something has to give. However I am not in favor of making college football pay its players. I think there is a need for a minor league for NFL and college football can go on its own crazy path. NCAA football also needs to get rid of bowl system to be legit. But that will never happen. Sorry I go off on so many tangents.
NCAA football and the NFL have so much power and political clout that they get away with things most other business can not. The courts look the other way. I can not understand how we can let an 18 year old join the armed forces, go to war and die but it is WAY too dangerous to play NFL football. They might die.
