I have defend Toyota on here before but now no more!
My 07 4Runner with 62k on it transmission blew up today. Car has been babied, also just paid it off a few months ago.
Good thing I bought a Toyota!

What did the dealership say?
It should have a 5yr/60k mile powertrain warranty. Being out of warranty by only 2k miles, Toyota should not give you too much grief over having them pay for the repair. Unless they find evidence of abuse. The dealership should be happy to call the regional Toyota folks to request authorization to replace it no charge. If they don't, call them yourself (calmly) and explain the issue, and I bet they'll pay for it.
Which engine do you have, the v8 or v6?

I agree...way too many Toyotas with major issues. Many of my coworkers have Toyotas, with major issues and/or recalls. They're gone off a cliff quality-wise in the past few years.

Sadly I will have to agree with you.

Yeah, it's unfortunate for the people buying them with the "stereotype" or expectation that they'd maintain their past level of quality. Also didn't help that Consumer Reports had been recycling old quality tests and ratings instead of re-testing newer models. Things were going downhill and only the people who bought them found out...prospective shoppers had no clue.
Anyways, are transmissions a common issue with that model? Maybe check a forum for that specific model.
If I were you, don't give up until they cover the entire thing. It's barely out of warranty and far before a reasonable failure mileage. Demand a loner car too...that job could take them awhile, especially with them being busy on the newest recall...2005-08 Corolla and Matrix with soldering issues, causing the engine to just stop, even at highway speed. Someone I work with has that car. Scary. There have been some accidents due to it.
Good luck.

Funny some guy on my 4Runner form was asking about 07 4Runners and if he should buy them I told him no and discussed my issues. the mod got on my case becasue I told him not to buy one; we talk about people drinking kool aid around here, good lord the Toyota kool aid must be really sweet!

Wow...that's bad. Every car forum I've been on discusses problems...and how to fix them...and what models/transmissions to avoid buying.
Sometimes, Toyota fans remind me of Apple fans...or Starbucks patrons. Many times, the same person is all three. :D
