Dove World Outreach Center has decided to hold a nice commiseration event on September 11th that involves burning Qur'ans (http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=International+Burn+a+Koran+Day). If they go through with it how long do you guys think these nice people have before they meet their maker?

p.s. Their mortgage lender has called in the balance of their loan and their property insurance has been cancelled by their insurer.

Yes DWOC, you have the right to free speech. That doesn't make expressing yourself in this way a good idea. At all.

This is one of those free speech issues. The same as the freedom of religion. Our constitution will allow you to do whatever you want as long as you are not hurting yourself, anyone else, or their property.

If you own the Qua'an, you are free to burn it. If you own the land you are free to build a place of worship there. If you own the flag, you can burn it too. Doesn't mean everyone has to agree with it. I sure don't, but who am I to take away your constitutional rights.

Basically I think extremism of all kinds leads to nothing but problems. What I want to know is how do we get to this point nine years later. Was this happening in 2001? Is this just media talking heads whipping up fear and feeding it to those willing to listen. Our nation is so messed up right now sometimes I wonder how much worse does it have to get before people snap out of it.

Very interesting about the insurance being canceled. One can only sit back and wait for this to unfold.

Sure, they are entitled to do so under freedom of speech.

That doesn't change the fact that this is the dumbest, most counterproductive idea that I've heard in a long time.

Nice "outreach," Dove.

there is a distinction with what is constitutionally protected speech and what is not.

burning a cross is not protected speech, it is hate speech.

the classic yelling "FIRE!" in a movie theater is not protected speech

burning the american flag is protected speech.

i guess the burning of the Koran falls somewhere in the penumbra of the gray area betwen burning a cross and burning a flag.

this could be interesting for con law scholars.

Good point about the hate speech. I wonder if since they own the books, and it is private property if that applies.
