I've started to notice that lately theres a trend towards what I would describe as running backs playing Wide Receiver. Now it's not that the players are built like running backs but the way they're used (ie moving the chains with safe plays) is reminscint of how teams have frequently employed running backs. Collinsworth actually touched on it tonight with Miles Austin.
Others in this category include Wes Welker, Brandon Marshall, and Dallas Clark

Austin goes over the middle too much to be a pass-catching "RB"

Thats exactly where I would expect that type of player to go. In fact it doesn't matter if it's left, middle, or right. So long as they're used on short routes where they're expected to make something happen after the catch. Come to think of it, Devin Thomas has the potential to fill a roll similar to that. Basically the premise is that they're used on routes that you could consider "high risk handoffs." Drags, curls, flats, quick in, quick out, and slants are the type of routes I would use for this type of player.

You've got to find away to get DT in the game at WR.

Yes Thomas should have been our 2 or 3 last night. AA and Joey didn't do anything, we also need to find Fred Davis, I'm sure shanny will find ways to get him involved

It's plain to see that offenses in the NFL have evolved. Outside of teams with absolute beasts at running back like Minnesota with Peterson, and Tennessee with Chris Johnson, the running game has become more of a complement to an offense rather than its primary feature.
On a side note, from what we saw last night, this thread is looking "stupid" right about now. Though I will say McNabb obviously needs more time than he's had to get on the same page with some of these other guys.

I second that Beem. Armstrong did nothing to impress me last night and DT was only our return man. He did a very nice job at that, but we need him at WR. Where was Banks? We needed to keep Austin on the active roster. Other than Moss, our WR corp was non existent.

Look at Forte and his monster game for the Bears receiving. I think you are definitely on to something. We need to see K Williams do that for us. We need guys that can catch!!!!!!

I have to offer a slight edit to my post -- on those two fade patterns to Armstrong in the endzone, McNabb put the ball right in his hands both times.
In preseason, Armstrong probably would have made those catches.
