juggernaunt 11-20-2004, 12:29 PM lets play gm of the mighty skins, and were much smarter than vinny (no talent evaluation)cerrato.
the players i cut are as follows brunnell $7,167, morton $1,040, barrow $2,157 and wynn $4,083 yes thats $14.5 million of fat we need to cut. lets take the hit now, rather than later.
players i'm gonna trade for draft picks.
samuels lets try and get atleast 2 #1 if possible, the super chargers and dolphins come to mind.
rod gardner we can defintly get a 2nd and 4th for him.
we need to build from with in,
ladel betts i also think we can get a 2nd or multi #3's for him
now the draft
since were gonna draft in the top 5, i trade down to pick up some more picks,. not out of the top 10.
with our top pick its Mathias Kiwanuka DE, BC, (samuels picks), mike patterson DT, USC tw/ our last #1 its Marcus Spears DE, lsu
2nd picks from trades
ben wilkerson C, LSU or michael munoz OT, TEN
3rd rd
antwaun rogers CB,purdue he's tall 6'2 180 needs some muscle but we need a tall corner.
any other ideas,
SKINSnCANES 11-20-2004, 01:44 PM We cant cut brunell this year. He'll be our backup for years to come and will hopefully learn Gibbs system well enough that he can be a great backup. Hes cap hit would be to huge to cut him this year.
I dont think we should trade Samuels, who would we replace him with? We need our two anchor tackles, its hard to get a pair as good as we have. We need Ramsey to get his protection and Portis to get his holes.
That Guy 11-20-2004, 02:40 PM i don't think you'd get as many picks as you think you'd get (two #1s and 11mill$ salary for an Olineman who's only above average??)... and we can't trade betts, we don't have any other good RBs on the roster... and any reason why you'd want to take on such massive deadcap when a lot of it is easily avoided?
Drift Reality 11-20-2004, 03:18 PM samuels lets try and get atleast 2 #1 if possible, the super chargers and dolphins come to mind.

I think you're overestimating these guys' trade value.
No one is going to trade a 2nd and a 4th for Gardner, nor is anyone going to trade a 2nd round pick for Betts.
Skins fan 44 11-20-2004, 04:56 PM FIRST OFF NEED TO REWORK BRUNELL'S CONTRACT, CAUSE HE IS ROBBING US BLIND. Will that happen doubtful. He says he is not retiring next year but I cant blame him. Would you walk away from a multi million dollar job? With our high draft pick next year we probably should trade for more picks and also save money and take a mid to late first round pick preferably O-line or D-line. Hope we can find some hidden jewels in the later rounds. Dont draft a qb. We can sign one if need be in the summer off the waiver wire for min salary look at the ones that were available last summer.
dragontat7169 11-20-2004, 05:07 PM get rid of Betts and Morton?...hmm..ok lets cut 2 of our 3 Kick returners and only be left with Thrash and if he gets hurt then we can use Brunell to run back kicks.
Did you actually think your cuts and trades through? I mean a 14 million hit next year would kill us. We have too many holes we would need to fill if we cut everyone in your list. Don't forget that trades also count against the Cap and Betts, Samuels, and Gardner would probably take us above 20 million (just guessing). That would mean we would have to renegotiate everyone elses contract because we could never afford to keep them. And we would lose all of our free agents that we have and probably lose Smoot, Pierce and a few others.
I guess your trades and cuts would be ok if we planned on going 0-16 to ensure that we get a first round pick in 2 years, but other than that...I don't see it as economically sound.
If I was the GM, I would wait until the end of the season..it is still too soon to look ahead for next year. We don't know what is going to happen. We can hope that Brunell retires..that would be the best thing that could happen. We need to see where we end up for the draft before we even begin to consider who we will get.
offiss 11-20-2004, 05:07 PM I would cut Brunell he's not even a viable backup I want to clear out his cap hit as soon as possible, I would compensate it with the trade of Samuels, and whatever I could get for Gardner, WR is not a position we are lacking, and get rid of Morton he's nothing special, my hope would be that either Wilson, or Molinaro would be ready to take over left tackle, but what I would really look into is Jansen's rehab and if he will be back 100%, if so I would look to slide him to the left tackle position which I believe he is more than capable of handling and move Wilson or Molinaro to the right tackle postion, this would offset the hit we would take for cutting Brunell, then we have some extra pick's to work with to fill the backup position at QB and seek line help on both sides of the ball, and add a legitimate kick returner, I much rather have Hasellbach backing up Ramsey than Brunell, Bett's isn't going to net that much in draft pick's or salary cap gain so he really doesn't factor, I would keep him he is a good backup to Portis,
Bottom line if I was the GM Brunell wouldn't be here to begin with.
celts32 11-20-2004, 06:48 PM I don't even think Samuels would bring back a single #1 in trade. He is more valuable to the Redskins than anything he could bring back. Betts has no value at all. And Gardner would bring no more thana 3rd or 4th rounder. Most teams just don't trade high draft picks for players unless they are at the very top of their position. I don't know if anyone remembers but the Colts only got like a 3rd or 4th round pick for Marshal Faulk when they traded him to the Rams. Basically, unless you are talking about a franchise QB don't expect to see NFL teams tossing around high draft picks...
Shane 11-21-2004, 11:11 AM Brunell I think can be rehabilitated as a backup quarterback if we can protect him. We will ask him to renegotiate to take a salary commensurate with backup status and I think he will comply, respectful of what it means to the team.
Samuels I hope and believe will resign with a salary that we can handle.
We have so many receivers that need playing time that I am beginning to think Rod Gardner is someone I would trade.
monk81 11-21-2004, 05:27 PM I keep hearing these rumors about Drew Brees and San Diego not affording BOTH Rivers and Brees and heard that the Redskins were one of the teams mentioned in the rumors......is this duable with our cap situation ?
