Doug Dutch is a badass name...

So, John Beck is 29 years old. Just one year younger than Grossman and a year (well, more like four months) older than Campbell.

Would have liked this trade a lot more if he was 26 or something, but those mormon missions will really kill your pro career.

John Beck's 2007 numbers were really, really terrible in any number of ways, but at least his interception rate was respectable.

I'm trying to understand the rationale behind the trade. We trade a player that probably wasn't going to make the team for another whose situation would appear to be simular at best. Is the plan for him the PS?

I'm thinking, if a guy isn't worthy of a roster spot they wanted to get him out and get another guy in, because why waste time? They don't want Colt -- probably don't want Beck either -- but they've gotta find out.

Beck has a greater than zero chance of being the no. 2 QB this year, which I believe is the rational behind the trade. I'll bet trade talks started between the Ravens and the Redskins on the topic of their CB depth, and that we tried to get a draft pick out of them, but couldn't. Doug Dutch wasn't going to make our team, and Beck wasn't going to make theirs (unless Troy Smith was traded), so the ability to look at John Beck in the preseason seems like a no-brainer.

In all likelyhood, he's going to get released before the season. He'd have to beat out Grossman for a roster spot, and there's enough evidence out there to think that Rex is just better. But with this trade, Shanahan can make the decision for himself.

Bartel is probably the practice squad/emergency QB in all possible outcomes. That's better security than Beck, who is competing with Grossman to make the team.

How is his arm strength? It seems like the problem with Rex, and Colt atleast was their arm strength and deep ball throws.Middling. He was a spread quarterback at BYU, and the Dolphins didn't run a downfield offense when they drafted him.

It's not a limitation or anything, but arm strength rarely is.

As I stated in the Colt thread, this move is interesting. Shanahan has stated he usually carries only 2 QBs. Although Beck's chance of making the team is not zero, it surely isn't much above 5%. Did they need another arm to throw balls to our 10 WR's?

I think the CB Dutch probably wouldn't have made the team either, but perhaps (?) he had a higher chance of making it.

Then again, Shanahan doesn't seem to play favorites, and if this guy magically impresses and shows the potential that made him a 2nd round pick.. I guess he could beat Rexy. Seriously doubt it. Practice squad as detailed above....

Yeah, he's an arm for camp but I do think he's here for competition for the #3 job. MS has went with only 2 QBs in the past so that's a possibility, but it seems more likely that he'll carry 3.
