That Guy 11-16-2004, 09:14 PM i remember a lot of people here asking what was up with giving brunell so much d*mned money... and i've also talked to plenty of people that were down on trotter from the start... no one had any real opinion on fiore that i've talked to though... gamble and a loss i guess, but he wasn't grossly overpaid.
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 11-16-2004, 09:25 PM Fiore was paid 4.5 million for 3 years with a 1.5 million signing bonus (pretty cheap considering his abilities). He was considered one of the league's better guards and perhaps the strongest guy in the NFL. It was a gamble we took (and was reflected in his salary) and we lost.
SkinsRock 11-17-2004, 03:20 PM EVERY team has busts and other draft picks and FA acquisitions that just don't pan out. The key is to minimize them and develop the young talent you have. To be able to do this, you first need stability in the front office and the coaching staff, which we have not had. We do now though!
Of course there are always "flukes" like Atlanta having success with a new coaching staff this year (so far), but if you look at the top teams, they all have stability up top...even if they have struggled recently...in addition to a group of core players. NE, Philly, Pittsburgh, NY Jets, Baltimore, etc. Yeah, they may have inserted newer people into important positions (like Roeth in Pitts and Boller in B-more) but their surrounding cast of coaches and players has been there to guide them along. Even Shotty's team is coming on in year 3!
We just have to be patient and have faith that Gibbs can build this team and bring the franchise back to the status it had when he left.
juggernaunt 11-17-2004, 08:31 PM 1st thing is FIRE CERRATO. 2nd thing is get us under the cap, and get some youth in here.
the players i would cut are brunnel, wynn, barrow, morton. i know its about a 10 million hit but we have to do it. its a must. not for nothing does anyone else realize that The Super Chargers are 20 million under the cap. they will franchise brees and gram get aleast a 1st and 3rd. so they will have 3 #1 picks in this draft. we have to spend smart.
ok, i gonna franchise samuels and trade him to the dolphins or chargers. they are willing to part w/ 2 #1 cause they need a left tackle, plus they will be able to get back picks w/ the brees deal.
with that this is how i would draft. with thw highest of the #1's i'm taking matthias kiwanuka, DE from B.C. guy is gonna be a stud, w/ the 2nd #1 antajj hawthorne DT, texas and w/ our 3rd #1 dan cody de/dt okla.... yes its 3 def lineman but its needs. were old on the def line + we cant live by the blitz 4 ever..
in the 2nd rd i'm takin ben wilkerson C, lsu.... and w/ our 4th pick barrett rudd from NEB, if we have a 5,6,and 7th its would go like this 5th DB, 6th, RB/kick ret, 7th DB.
thats just what i would do. we have to be smart. vinny messed the niners up and there are still paying 4 it. would any of you run your business like this
SmootSmack 11-17-2004, 08:37 PM Very nice post juggernaut. I merged the thread you started with another, on the same subject, started yesterday by diehardskin
Just as a general rule to everyone. Let's try to avoid having too many threads on the same topic. Take a minute to browse through the thread subjects. Makes it easier on everyone
Sheriff Gonna Getcha 11-17-2004, 08:46 PM Juggernaut,
Antajj Hawthorne is a DT for Wisconsin, not Texas.
I wouldn't cut Brunell (because cutting him would create too big of a cap hit) until June 1, 2006 or Barrow (since he's not eating a ton of cap space).
Brees will get a 1st at most and more likely a 2nd rounder.
No one in thier right mind would give up 2 1st rounders for Samuels, especially for the cap figure he's going to carry.
Finally, we don't have a 2nd rounder because we traded it to the Saints to get Cooley in the 3rd round of the 04 draft.
sportscurmudgeon 11-17-2004, 08:57 PM Skinsrock:
You said, "Even Shotty's team is coming on in year 3!" I understand that you are arguing in favor of continuity - which I agree is something that would benefit the Redskins a lot. However, you seem to imply that "Shotty" is a mediocre kind of coach whose team finally seems to be coming around despite him. If that is not what you meant, then I apologize; that's what I read into your remark.
For the record, Marty Schottenheimer had won more than 60% of the game he coached in the NFL prior to comeng here to Washington. He was not - and is not now - a stumblebum. "Martyball" may not be top-shelf in terms of excitement, but over his career of about 12-14 years prior to DC, he won about 10 games a year on average. That is not bad at all. I do not believe that the Redskins have won 10 games in any year since Gibbs left in the early 1990s - but if they have I'm willing for someone to point out that I am wrong here.
So when you ache and pine for stability, ask yourself why Marty Schottenheimer was fired after only one season. Who did it and why? Then you will begin to understand why stability and continuity will be difficult to obtain for this team...
That Guy 11-17-2004, 09:07 PM atlanta isn't a fluke, vick just matters that much to them... though their D is 200% better this year...
SmootSmack 11-17-2004, 09:13 PM SC: Skins were 10-6 in 1999
sportscurmudgeon 11-17-2004, 09:17 PM I stand correctred.
