I know that we got down early and had to pass. But at the start of the game we threw practically every down against one of the leagues worst rushing d's. I do not understand why we decided to pass pass pass when we have C. Portis in the backfield. In his only start against the Bengals he had 120 something yards and 2 TDs.

It was discouraging to see them not use Portis (he ended up with 81 yards on 17 carries). I think we went into panic mode too soon, just like in the Giants game. I think the plan was to come out firing, get some completions, and give the offense a confidence boost against one of the worst Ds in the league. Obviously our offense was more anemic that the coaching staff thought and it didn't work out that way.

I think they might bave been thinking that since everyone is expecting the run why not fool them with the pass. Also I believe they had a couple of rookies at safety right? I could be wrong there

The play calling was very poor and I feel it cost us the game.

I feel this was because gibbs was trying make something happen for brunnell, like to say give me something to keep you in. but it progressively got worst and there for made the change. next week will hopefully be a different story.

He was absolutely terrible.
I (no kidding) could have completed more than 1 of those passes he attempted.

I'm pretty sure most of us could cpayne, in all seriousness. Or at least made them catchable.
Anyway, the playcalling was very dissapointing, but when were down 17, what are ya gonna do? Against Philly we need a healthy dose of Portis, and then take shots down the feild. But yeah, I was really shocked not to see Portis get at least 25 touches.

I think we gave up on Portis early, though I guess I can see why it happened. We were down 17 in the first half, so there was still plently of time at that point. Also, I think we need to try throwing to him more. Anything to get him the ball!
(Incidently, Cooley needs more touches. What great hands!)
I think the plan was to try to get Brunell established early. Obviously that didn't happen and it was 14-0 very quickly.

My interpretation of the game plan was that he was calling all pass plays early to loosen up the defense. The Bengals knew they were weak against the run and they also knew that we couldn't pass worth the heck, so Joe figured that they would stack the line of scrimmage and leave the receivers in single coverage. Brunell couldn’t make the reads fast enough let alone make any good throws and we fell behind so quickly that we had no choice but to abandon the run.
With Ramsey in there you can see the passing game is going to get a lot better. Ramsey has good footwork and stands very tall in the pocket and delivers rockets when he has the time to plant his feet and throw. With Brunell you can see that he is so unsure of himself and is afraid of making a mistake that he is quick to leave the pocket and try to buy extra time. But because he is up there in years he no longer has the ability to do that forcing him to throw off his back foot resulting in high throws with little velocity on them. I agree that against the Eagles they need to run it more and keep McNabb and Owens off the field. I still believe in Gibbs and I know he will turn this thing around, maybe not this season but real soon.
