Had a great FB debate on this. I have no problem with what happened.
There is a longer/full vid from this and it shows more of what happened before the punch. I'm not sure he needed to do it but honestly he needed to create separation and it worked. In the long term that's less painful than mace or a taser. By taking her to the ground to restrain her he'd have left his weapons exposed and there were plenty of people around. He could've also been more prone to external attack.
That girl just didn't want to behave. You guys know that I'll say F Cops just about as quickly as anybody on here but he's fine here. Had that been a guy he would've gotten the baton justifiably.
LOL had it been a guy the cop would've been whooped before he could say peep...

To me this is the bottom line. The cop is a pussy and a moron...double threat guy! He can't handle himself (physically, mentally or emotionally) and completely lost control of a situation that really shouldn't have gone anywhere. Forget about the guidelines, laws and regulations. If the precinct wants to have a cheese-ball like that on the force you can't have respect for the local law enforcement.
I find the broad-based support of the dude's actions disturbing and sad.
Why because he was attacked while doing his job and was defending himself? It seems like your making the excuse for the girl and what she did and thats why kids think they can get away with this shit.

Your sympathy for those who would obstruct justice is disturbing and sad.

If i'm not mistaken isn't it a felony to even try and keep a cop from arresting somebody or otherwise doing his duty??

They're probably could have been a better way for the cop to handle the situation than to throw a punch. But the thread title, to me at least, is a bit misleading. Cop Punches Student sounds like this girl was just minding her own business, sitting in the university library, studying for an exam when suddenly a cop rolls up and pounds her with an uppercut...which clearly wasn't the case

Others have also pointed out that the cop was after the person for J Walking. It was at a school and they could have issues with kids crossing the street every where so they want them to all cross at the cross walks with guard. There is a school around here where this was a big issues and after the problem got so bad cops started handing out tickets. It could very well be a traffic and safety issue.

The cop should move out to Maryland, where then he could have arrested everyone with cell phone cameras too:

the one incident yes, but (from the same article):
Peter Hermann has written extensively on this topic, which has been embraced by the Maryland ACLU, which is representing a Harford County man charged by Maryand State Police with recording a traffic stop and posting it on YouTube . Later, during the Preakness, a Baltimore police officer was captured on video warning a bystander to turn off his camera while recording the arrest of a disorderly woman. That man was not arrest, nor was his equipment seized.
I said come to Maryland, as it is the State which says that citizens do not have the right to record police arrests, on the basis they are supposedly not public events.

I don't think that you should be able to record police because there are many times that "the public" will not like what they see. Remember that a cop is not going to start harrassing you for no reason. This is not the 1960's. Attitudes about cops have to change. Several times when somebody records a police incident the whole thing is taken out of context, blown out of proportion, and the police officers end up with a bad wrap.
In the video where the Police officer in an unmarked vehicle pulls over the motorcyclist the paint a picture that makes you believe that the cyclist didn't know that he was a cop or what was going on. In reality there was a marked car with lights on behind the cyclist who was trying to get him to pull over. Because the cyclist didn't pull over the officer in the unmarked car went to assist by pulling in front of him. He knew that he wasn't getting robbed. The officer drew his weapon but never pointed it at him. The officer also identified himself as if the flashing lights behind him weren't enough.
