I was doing some thinking and reading (I'm bored at work today) about our QB situation and was people to weigh in on the worst starting QB (more than 2 starts) we have had over the past 20 years.

In order of patheticness I would like to offer:
1. Heath Shuler
2. Mark Brunell
3. Danny Wuerffel
4. Cary Conklin (I don't know if he fit the 2 start criteria, but he was horrid)
5. Gary Hogeboom (ah, the Richie Pettibon era)
6. Tony Banks
7. Shane Matthews
8. Stan Humphries (although he led the Chargers to a SB, he sucked in WAS)
9. Jeff George
10. Gus Frerotte (the head butt alone puts him on the list)

Thoughts, additions, ommissions?

2005 season stats (heath shuler)
i guess he was pretty d@mn bad. but he was a rookie.... brunell is supposed to be the saavy vet.

Just take a look at Brunell's career.

Then take a look at PRam's. The two QB's beginning is pretty similar except for the mobility of Brunell.

Ramsey has to start NOW!! Why Brunell keeps getting the nod from Joe and Co. is beyond me.

I agree that Tony Banks should be on the list but not at #6, maybe #10. I mean think about it, he wasnt great but he was better than Jeff George, Matthews, Frerotte, and Humpheries. Tony did what was asked of him, and if you remember that season George was fired after his second game, and Tony at least played us to an 8-8 season. They others I am pretty sure had loosing seasons for us.

To be honest, I went back and forth between the two of them.. I put Shuler because he was young and never got better. I think Brunell was damaged goods when we got him.

I think we should take into account the management decisions when thinking abour Brunell and Shuler.

We drafted Shuler with a top-five pick; but we traded a 3rd rounder and signed Brunell to an 8.6 million dollar signing bonus.

Which hurts us more?

I think in some ways, Shuler does - considering we could have gotten a blue-chip prospect with that pick, and also, we began to look at him as a savior.

The cap room hurts with Brunell, but no one had huge expectations about him and are definately not building the team around him.
