I think one of the main things for those showing unrest with the trade until the past couple weeks is because of Portis' large numbers of fumbles in such a short span, with 2 or 3 of those resulting in touchdowns by the opposing team. Hopefully gibbs will adapt the system a little bit more towards portis's style and Portis will learn not to ever run 5-6 yards backwards.

I can't believe how well Portis has done considering most of the teams admit that Brunell isn't a threat and they stack the box against him. To have 800 yards half way through the season is a great accomplishment considering the circumstances. Really, imagine where this team would be without Portis right now. I hate to say it but I don't think we would have won any games without him.

I prefere to imagine where this team would be without Brunell right now. :thumb:

Portis has over 800 yards after 8 games. The Redskins had 1,653 TOTAL rushing yards in 2003. He's on a pace to come just under that figure (1620).
Granted, it was Spurrier's offense, but that's still quite an accomplishment!
Oh, and by the way, no Redskin has ever rushed for over 1,440 yards.....ever! Davis set the record in 2001 with 1,432 (I think).

Bottom line, Gibbs will adapt to his players' strengths, and if that means more "zone blocking" runs, so be it. He adapted from "Air Gibbs" to the power running game for Riggins, so if he realized that he needed to adapt again for Portis, then good for him. Also, I'd imagine that if the passing game actually gets going, Portis will have even more success.

if we had a passing game, portis would have broken 1000 already ;)

Imagine that, Gibbs adapting his offense to his player's strengths. Not changing it wholeheartedly, but adding wrinkles, as Matty pointed out. Seems I've seen someone on this site repeatedly calling Gibbs too old and stubborn to change

I see a totally new strategy more than a wrinkle. I wonder what took so long.

In every game we've won, portis has put up better numbers than brunell... Whether you hate to say it or not, its absolutely true.

Boy, you wrote a thread and did not use the word 'suck' in any of your descriptions of Brunell. Wow, your vocabulary is expanding.
