Beneil (diehard since 87) 04-03-2010, 11:08 AM Who said anything about WP taking CPs place? This is a head scratcher signing for me, but I didn't see anyone saying what you are accusing "people" of saying. Take the CP tinted glasses off bro, I think this move will make him better.

First of all, Why is it that every time i defend CP people act like either i AM him or that i'm his biggest fan!? My current favorite Skin is London Fletcher, followed closely by DeAngelo Hall, Cooley, and THEN Portis. None of who am I more devoted to than my altime favs Darrell Green, Art Monk, and Sean Taylor. Portis is the friggin man and I will not let one concussion and a few bad statements change my whole opinion of him.
Sorry if my post seems unwarranted. It's not in direct response to many posts here. My friends are doggin' me about it. Either they are like, "Ha ha! New people in charge and they are STILL doing the same thing!" in reference to grabbing players past their prime... but mostly i'm getting it from friends that think that Fast Willie is guaranteed the #1 spot cuz Portis is old and LJ is slow. Granted, the one that is picking on me the most is a Steelers fan...
As for your opinion... i kinda agree. But to me, the only thing that will REALLY make him better is a better O-line.
Son Of Man 04-03-2010, 11:31 AM Prediction of RB position battle:
1. Portis (starter due to effectiveness running and pass pro)
2. Johnson (short yardage and expanded Betts role)
3. Parker (change of pace back)
Log it.

SBXVII 04-03-2010, 11:33 AM Please they've been in the League one year & Sanchez has a great OL please you know this he has a great OL. It's how you evaluate your QB if you have a good coach you can get a good maybe even great QB in the later rounds that basically goes for any position i just beleive OL is a bigger need.
I couldn't find it last night but thankfully found it today. I found this very interesting.

People who think that it is business as usual have no idea what they are talking about. When you sign proven players to one year deals you are creating a competitive environment. One year incentive laden deals are the best possible contract for the team. The player has no advantage in that situation.
Fast Willie isn't guaranteed the #1 spot at all. He probably has more to overcome than Portis and Johnson. Some people hate Portis so they ignore the facts.
Portis is the youngest of the three. Portis has a great track record in this coach's system. Portis' injury was a concussion not a blown out knee and I believe he would have come back earlier if they had anything to play for. I would argue that Portis has less doubts than Johnson and Parker.
Let the other team's fans say what they want. When our runningbacks are dumptrucking them you can laugh at all of them.

All good points, what these two signings do is put very talented players in a highly competitive state, through financial incentives, with CP who really has no financial incentive. It is up to the coaches to get the best out of every player on the team, and if CP views this as a wake up call and participates and outperforms the other two the team wins, if he doesn't bounce back and either of the other two meet their incentives, the team still wins. Excellent for fans of the team, not necessarily for fans(or haters) of a specific player.

I agree. I don't particulary like Portis, but this is straight up telling it like it is. It's all about competition.
halodoc 04-03-2010, 01:11 PM No way all three are on roster on day one .
tryfuhl 04-03-2010, 02:59 PM Willie is the best back-up ever! (ha ha ha!)
Ok, here are the stats, Portis is better in the following categories: Yards per carry, yards per game, double digit TD seasons, over 1,200 yard seasons, 20+ yard carries, 40+ yard carries, 3 times as many receiving yards, and a WAY higher passer rating (lol).
Both have 2 pro-bowls, but CPs last one is more recent.
People are silly. They think of "Fast Willie" and grin, talking about how he should take CP's place when Portis is better in every statistical category that matters. Think about it. Willie's best season was 1,494 yards in 2006. Portis had 1,487 in 2008 with a crappy o-line. He's also got 3 seasons in the 1,500s... so to me there is no comparison. AND HE'S A YEAR YOUNGER THAN WILLIE!?!?!?
did anybody here say that he was better than Portis?
Zerohero 04-03-2010, 03:09 PM I don't know how anyone who has been watching the last two years can have any faith in Portis as a starting rb. That being said, this competition might get him riled up enough to care and produce. Maybe we didn't sign 2 great rbs, but they pretty good with star potential.
