So Champ was the malcontent? We were absolutely hosed in that deal. We gave up the premier corner in the league and a second round pick for a great runningback in Denver's system and above average runningback in Gibbs' system. Portis was never a superstar here.I agree with you. I was just pointing out that by justifying Oaklands end of a trade (that right now is an unsubstantiated PFT rumor) using labels that suggest all players are of equal value at their positions*. So I was trying to show how you could take something as clear cut as the Portis-Bailey trade, label the parties as such, and come up with a rule that seems to make it preposterous that the "winning" side would be interested.

The NFL definition of "franchise" is paid in the top five of a position, so to call someone not in the top five at their position a "franchise" player would be stretching the definition to something that, IMO, it isn't meant to cover.

So there is no way this would even happen. Having the "best" corner really doesn't mean a whole lot anymore. If Campbell and McNabb aren't in the same discussion, even though they have similar statistics, how can you suggest that Samuel and Asomugha are on the same planet? I don't want to argue with you about the value of an elite corner because I understand where you are coming from there (not sure if I agree), but why can't that argument be applied to quarterback?

Samuel is probably as far from Asomugha as McNabb is from Peyton Manning. Or at least as far as Eli is from Peyton. They may both be pro-bowlers, but one is unquestionably superior, however much that may mean.

Portis was always a workhorse. But the entire philosophy of featuring one back no longer works in this league.

It hasn't for a decade now. I just wish that our coaches would have understood that, and would have pulled off a mini Herschel Walker type of trade with Portis years ago.

You can't attribute these backs to a team loss. Playoffs or not. Step back from that u know better.... there are 30 examples of backs who did well in season n then did great in the playoffs.

I agree and at the time was upset that Betts wasn't being given a chance. I thought Betts was going to be really good and didn't really know much about Portis.

I feel the same as you, man. I remember how stupid i thought it was that we were trading our best player for a guy who even then, was starting to become an issue. (He wanted more money in Denver, threatened to be a holdout, and Shanahan put him on the block).

And a few months ago, when CP was getting into it with Lavar, he suggested that some guys (Lavar, Bailey, Coles), would have wanted out of town anyway because when CP came in he was the new top-paid guy.

Looking back over it all, we lost a 10 time pro bowler, to somebody who has been solid, but not elite. Those were the kind of trades that we were known from in the Vinny era.

Hopefully now that kind of stuff is a thing of the past...

Never had heard that about Champ, but if that's true it makes me even madder that we traded him in that lopsided deal. (We could've paid some kind of settlement to his wife rather than give up a 2nd!) He's still a quality starter, though his age shows at times.
