Excellent post!!My beef with Landry is his attitude. If he keeps up this childish bullshit then he will never live to his potential, basically in getting Mays or Berry you get a talented player without BS. I'm sick of "me" players who hurt the team with their own selfish attitude.

Moving him to SS is just one of many ways to simplify his role in the defense (along with pretty much any other change, given the ridiculous amount of responsibility Landry had in the defense), but it's the one with basically no upside.
I see your point on the upside of keeping the superior athlete at FS. Do you think/attribute Landry's struggles to Blache and the secondary coach's tutelage? What I mean is, there were reports last year of Blache asking for Landry to approach situations a certain way and the secondary coaches asking him to do something different. If I'm remembering correctly the safeties and corners attended separate meetings for game planning???
skinster 03-21-2010, 03:18 PM Landry has enormous talent but will never be that good of player. I hate to say this about anyone, but the kid just seems dumb out on the field. He sees to just run around like a chicken with his head cut off. I saw so many missed plays he made because he is always thinks he is the most athletic person on the field (which might be true, but not the the extent that he believes it) and can just go full steam to stop any play. He hasn't developed any football sense because he just relies on his athletic ability his entire life up untill his pro career. Developing a feel for the game does not come naturally, it comes with years of experience, and for him to start learning now would take too long for him to get the hang of it. He will never be a superstar, he can be effective if we ask him to do simple tasks though that doesn't require much of a learning curve.

Sean NEVER avoided contact. He never dove to the turf to avoid making a tackle. He never threw himself out of position at the last second to get out of the way of the ball-carrier. Sean was the fiercest safety in football. Yes he had a down year adjusting to Williams' scheme, but does anyone doubt he would be a greatest if he were alive today?
Most important Sean was a guy we were so proud of to see in the B & G. The dude visited w/ his family in the stands on gameday. His priorities were solid. Sean had already arrived as a person, if not as the player we knew he was becoming.

What's so hard about avoiding late hits and not taunting? Or focusing on a game instead of getting revenge on Brandon Jacobs? Or be a bit smarter about tackling and try not to fly in out of control into a player causing him to whiff tackles?

I don't understand why you keep bringing this up, are you sure that Landry is going to change? Shouldn't the fact that the same thing happen with another young player, make Landry screw his head on straight? Is Landry on the verge of having a kid that will make him change his ways the same way that happened with Sean Taylor?

Seriously? Do you watch Landry on the field? Against Atlanta Landry avoided contact almost the entire game. Very early he waited for a player to run out of bounce instead of creating contact (I think it was Turner). L8r he dove to the turf in terror when Turner ran up the gut and Landry had an open field shot. Personally I think that play is the most memorable of Landry's career rather than his getting trucked by Jacobs. He avoided Turner basically the entire game though, as he does whenever he faces a dangerous player.
I mean this stuff is on tape...
And it's another reason why the moving him to SS argument is nonsense. First of all he played a centerfield safety for LSU. He roamed deep in the backfield and picked off a hell of the lot of passes, until his senior year when offensive coordinators just stopped calling any deep passes against LSU's defense. He was a deep FS almost his entire college career. When we drafted him it was to compliment Sean in that we could have two guys roaming back there, not to keep a guy in the box. If Landry is put at SS I PROMISE our defense regresses because it only means more missed tackles and more penalties. As FS Landry rarely sees the RB get that far up-field (because we've got excellent tacklers mostly at LB and SS) but almost every time that happens Landry gives up a TD.

I don't see any reason that Landry cannot get better. What leads you to believe that he won't mature and become a better pro?
To judge a man's career after only 3 years just doesn't make sense to me.
