with it being a medium opacity white watermark you could PROBABLY find someone to clone/heal the area to make it much less visible

not that I'm condoning such action

Getty says this is the guy who took the picture:
Professional Photographer Al Messerschmidt in tarpon Springs | SportsShooter.com (http://www.sportsshooter.com/members.html?id=6780)

The Sports Photography of Al Messerschmidt - Sports & Celebrity Photography (http://www.sportsphotographyofmesserschmidt.com/)

Perhaps contact him directly and he might be willing to sell you the print? Be as detailed as possible in your contact to him and see what happens.

doesn't getty buy the rights exclusively?

not sure, so don't quote me on it

I thought it but would not publicly say it.

Could be, but perhaps he's got others that he didn't sell to Getty? I don't know. I just know it never hurts to ask...

He could be out of the business and thrilled he's getting credit for the photos nearly 20 years later and treat you very good.

Or he could say $500 each or blow you off...either way, nothing lost other than a couple of minutes but could be a lot to gain.
