2010 NFL Free Agency Rumors and Reports (Week 2)

Just because someone has never played in a 3-4 before does not mean we should trade a young talented LB away, or scrounge for a mediocre LB that has 3-4 experience. There are these things, these people, they are called coaches. And when handed a team, or implementing a system, they do this thing, its called coaching. Then the players learn from these, "Coaches", and then play the game of football after a period of being "Coached". Difficult concept, I know, but it has been known to work.

Its not that fricking hard to switch defenses. Especially for an athletic player like MacIntosh or blades.

Give Haslett and Shanahan a shot. Plus, I really think our base defense will become a Hybrid of the two anyway, where the personnell on the field doesnt necessarily change, but they move and shift around alot, blitzing from different spot, and lining up differently on each play. I actually dig the idea, but when dealing with this hybrid, a straight up 3-4 LB is not one we necessarily need. We need young talent that can be coached up, and learn this hybrid. This new defense could become the new big thing, or, the defensive "WildCat" if you would.

The whole point of drafting a player is to hope they can help your team win the superbowl. If we're even considering trading a successful draft pick like Rocky because he doesn't know the 3-4 ILB position "YET" are we not going completely against that? It just seems a bit stupid to me to get a 31 year old guy who just got released by the Broncos and expect him to do any better than a kid fighting for his next big contract.
And about this defensive "WildCat", wouldn't that be nice. Get a guy like Kemo coming in on 1st and 2nd down with our OLBs for the 3-4. Then 3rd/4th down comes (or vice-versa) and we go right back to a 4-3 with Rocky, Wilson, potentially Carter. That would be a defining moment in defensive schemes I think.

I never said anything about trading anyone. You honestly can't expect a player, who has never played in a 3-4 defense, to be able to transition, without any problems, just because they're being "coached", just ask Aaron Kampman or Andre Carter about trying to transition to a 3-4. Saying that it's not hard to switch defenses is an extremely ignorant thing to say, it takes some teams years to get the right pieces in place to fully transition to a 3-4.

I agree that our defense, this year, will be somewhat of a hybrid, but to call it a "new" defense or something that has never been seen before is a mistake. Haslett isn't going to come up with some new, innnovative defense that no one in this league has ever seen before.

Your two arguements were both DE's chaging to an OLB position. Rocky and Blades are linebackers who will have to learn much less and in Blade's situation hardly anything at all except for more help on the inside.

Well, short of storming the field in assless chaps and high heels, I know that our Hybrid of a defense will not be something that has never been seen before on an NFL field. But a Hybrid system as our BASE defense, not pigeonholing our D as 43 or 34, would be relatively new, and to my knowledge never done before. Of course the schemes will be new takes on defenses that have previously been utilized, but as far as blitzing from different angles, not even knowing how any people are up front, switching, on every play as a base defense, has never been done, and it would be innovative in my opinion.

This is the whole essence of why your proposed move would not make sense if that is the way the Redskins defensive coaching staff are going. Even seasoned 34 LB's or seasoned 43 DT's and DE's would have something new to learn, as well as having something unique to bring to the defense as well though. I just find it a little disheartening that you think we should give away a Stud young Athlete because he has never played LB in a 34, or because he weighs 15 - 20 lbs shy of your stereotypical 34 ILB. Thank god Haslett is letting, so far, the players and talents define and determine the schemes, and not the schemes and setups determining the players. Ability and youth should be injected into this team based on just that, not previous defenses and systems played.

Ideally, the only real piece of the puzzle that would never change, or his role would never change, Hybrid or 34 or 43, would be our NT/DT. Occupy blockers for the rest of the unit to move more freely to create havoc.

The assless chaps and high heels might not be such a bad idea. I never said anything about getting rid of Rocky, I like Rocky and I hope that Haslett can utilize him somewhere in his scheme. I never even said that Davis should start, but it's obvious that Allen, Shanahan, and Haslett are actively persuing players that are suited/experienced to play the 3-4 i.e. Foote, Kemoeatu, and Carriker and players who are not exactly suited to play the 3-4 (Carter, McIntosh) are reportedly on the trading block.

Actually, I was gonna say assless chaps and crotchless spandex, but im sure someone on here would have gotten offended, so, high heels came off the bench......

And I am sorry, I shouldnt have given the impression u said anything about getting rid of Tosh. I was just thinking about some of the threads earlier and got him and Blades mixed up. Honest mistake, but you did never say anything regarding giving Tosh up. Sorry for the mix up m8. :)

Well, Bradford is definitely, at least in my opinion, the best QB in the draft. Id still like to see Pike or Snead develop for a year or two tho.........

P.S. - I just cant get those pics of Clausen with the ugly girls out of my mind whenever I hear his name, hahahhahaha!

I just realized something, the saints just lost their starting OLB to FA, and they cut their starting DE. NO's Defense is run by Gregg Williams whom brought in Andre Carter and Rocky McIntosh. We are switching to a 3-4 Defense which Andre Carter has already said he doesn't fit in, and many believe Rocky would be too small for the project ILB position. Could I be sensing a trade here that would send Rocky and Andre to the saints for a few draft picks, like a 2nd and 6th rounder? Sure Rocky's been tendered for a 3rd, and we don't exactly know what we could get for andre, but I think if you put the two together we could be getting those picks, or similar picks.

Rocky is tendered for a second. This is a good idea however I think the trade would be those two players for their 1st and 6th plus conditional picks based on playing time. If this was to happen we should use that 32nd pick on Brandon Spikes or Sean Lee. Before I read "you'd never get a number 1 for Carter and McIntosh," those are 2 starting players in the prime of their careers being traded for an unknown.
