over the mountain 03-10-2010, 12:14 PM It is. However like I said earlier wearing a shirt like that ("drink like a champion") doesn't bode well when you try to convince people that you don't have an alcohol problem and of course if it was the only thing then fine, but this on top of a laundry list of dumb decisions.\
i heard he had a shirt on with like an emblazened devil on it.
the fact that ben was accused of rape in az will not be evidence for the jury to hear if this goes to trial.

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger should settle with his new accuser - Mike Florio - NFL - Sporting News (http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/article/2010-03-10/steelers-qb-ben-roethlisberger-should-settle-his-new-accuser)
If Rothlesberger is innocent, then yeah, i can see how Florio's advice would make sense. But what if he's guilty? Florio is basically saying, "if you have a lot of money, its ok to commit rape. you can just pay off the victim later if they decide to talk."
I realize that none of us know the facts, but it distrubs me that so many people are assuming that he's innocent of rape and that she is guilty of purgery. We don't know a thing about this woman, but we know enough about Rothlesberger to question both his character and his judgement. If people are going to start making assumptions, i dont see why they would side in favor of Rothlesgerger.

while i agree with you, i dont think we should use the AZ allegations (which seem to be false) to bolster this accusation.
just b/c you were drunk doesnt mean you committed rape.
just b/c you were accused of rape before, doesnt mean you raped now.
the AZ allegation will not be admissible evidence if this one goes to trial.
so what do we really have to question roth's credibility vs the woman's? the motorcycle accident? the fact that he seems to like to drink?
without actual facts coming to light, i cant make a judgment call.
BigHairedAristocrat 03-10-2010, 01:36 PM i agree that we can't make a definitive judgement now, but the fact that rothlesberger is involved in some sort of incident every year is enough to question his judgement. he shouldnt be putting himself in these situations to begin with. his behavior is clearly reckless if nothing else.
my overall point is that presuming Rothlesberger is innocent of sexual assualt means we are assuming his accuser is guilty of making the whole thing up. it just concerns me that so many people are quick to assume the later is true. i think there are far more me who get away with sexual assault because the victims don't speak up than there are women who falsely accuse men of rape to get money.

However, from a strictly unemotional, dollars & cents, and legal perspective, his advice is sound. Roth will spend more in legal fees defending himself with an uncertain outcome than he would in writing a settlement check.
Now, if the woman takes the money in settlement it would lead to one of two conclusions IMO; 1) she made it up and cashed in on Roth's stupidity 2) she didn't make it up, but chose to take a settlement, which is her moral decision, but would still leave the impression on many in the public that she was just "cashing in". Either way, it helps Big Ben in the public eye and makes a very expensive and possibly freedom threatening problem go away quickly.
Now, if the woman declines the settlement, then the likelihood is she isn't making the story up and morally she won't sell out. If that's the case, Big Ben is in a whole heap of trouble and deservedly so.
I do agree with your take on folks blindly favoring Big Ben, you know the saying; once is chance, twice is coincidence, three times is a trend.

The thing is thought that Ben is already a rich man. Money isn't really a problem for him. So in the end I think it depends on weather or not Ben goes on principle and refuses to acknowledge such an accusation by paying for it to go away. Though you're right that it would make more sense to pay her off if he could. Has anyone heard from Kobe's "victim" lately?
I could sworn though that I heard that Ben did offer a settlement but was turned down. Personally I'd rather this go to trial in hopes of getting to the bottom of this.
Of course if this was an early episode of Law and Order they'd try to arrange a plea deal. "Man 2, he does the max." "See you in court Stone." Pains me to know that no one will understand this reference.

she said she was assaulted, not raped. big difference. i'm not a lawyer but what does that mean? it could mean he grabbed her ass, or grabbed her tits when she wasn't expecting it. to me this sounds like some girl crying wolf. how do you assault someone in a club when people are walking in and out of a bathroom? it just doesn't make any sense.
SmootSmack 03-10-2010, 03:50 PM Well we don't know what exactly happened. Roethlisberger could have had one of his boys block the bathroom so no one got in and out. He could have been like "Whatever, I'm Ben Roethlisberger. Let them watch"

some things are possible. but some are less possible. i just find it very hard to believe that an nfl star ( or anyone w/ common sense) is sexually assaulting someone in a college bar while his wingman blocks the door.
SmootSmack 03-10-2010, 03:59 PM Well it's questionable if Roeth has common sense
