Yeah but people's lives aren't dependent on your job FD. I would feel a little better knowing my pilot isn't disgruntled, over-worked, under-paid, or tired from working long hours or a 2nd job.
Fresh out of college I was making $35k, sad to hear that a pilot is scraping by at $20k.

There are no captains on the major airlines making $20k. Smaller, regional airlines is where you get scraps. I would be surprised if the number of First Officers making less than $50k was very big, flying for major airlines. Captains can make $200k+. Most are probably in the $150k range depending on how many hours they fly.
