Nope , may I remind you we will have a new DC,and a new scheme.
What is it that you know about KP that no other expert knows, that makes you believe he is done?
I don't know anything more than what the experts have published but Phillips played free safety and the Giants just paid 37 million for a free safety. Now maybe Phillips has a year or two left in him but he has arthritis in his knee and is coming off of a season ending hip injury. Either way, it doesn't seem like they felt like they could count on Phillips as a long term solution.
From the outside, I thought the G-men needed a linebacker more than a safety.
The G-men's FO is pretty good normally and for them to make an unusual move like this may be a signal.

What is that supposed to mean? I think the Giants are going to have some issues on the defensive side of the ball again this year. Last year they yielded nearly 30 points per game, Osi Umenyiora still isn't happy about being benched and you axed, arguably, the best play caller in football: Antonio Pierce. And they just made Antrel Rolle the highest paid safety in football history. (though the final point is relative nowadays). He's good, but I don't know about that one.
My point is the Giants simply don't have a scheme problem, there are personnel issues they have to address this offseason. Can Kenny Phillips rebound coming off injured reserve, there's still no clear cut successor to Antonio Pierce in the middle, and can Rolle have an immediate impact on a defense that gave up over 40 points three times last year?
freddyg12 03-07-2010, 02:12 PM Again, I see a lot of talk about the safety position. What's wrong w/what we have? It's actually one of the deepest, if not deepest, positions on the team & all of them are young. In a year when we haven't chased the big name players, we certainly weren't going to spend a lot on a safety given the roster we have.
freddyg12 03-07-2010, 02:30 PM I actually agree here. I've hated the Skins approach in the past, but this season was a year where I would have liked to have thrown some money at Rolle to have him HERE. We can do the measured approach thing when there IS a cap. I mean maybe it's more than just money, like maybe how the players feel in the locker room based on contracts, but overall I think we could have been just a little more aggressive.
I'm not ready to say there's a new approach yet.
This year's approach is really only surprising or different because the cap is different. Those vets wouldn't have all been cut if the cap were in place, and we wouldn't be talking about Snyder spending a lot if the cap were in place. Likely because he wouldn't be even if they'd cleared a lot of cap space.
Take a look back & you'll see that it wasn't EVERY year that we signed big FAs. Gibbs' big class in 04 was followed by a quiet 05 in which D. Patton & C. Rabach were signed to fairly modest deals. The distrous 06 (Arch, Loyd, etc.) was followed by a fairly quiet 07; Smoot came back, Fletcher was signed, and I can't think of anyone else significant. 2008 wasn't very big either, other than Zorn being hired I'd have to go back & look at the roster to see who was signed.
2009 of course was the big payday for AH & I think that is still in everyone's mind. Even w/that signing, agree w/them or not (I didn't like it), Danny & Vinny said they targeted the top player in FA that they thought could make a difference. i.e., they have shown restraint when they had to or when they didn't like the players available.
I think this year isn't a good gauge of how the new mgmt. spends in free agency, because I realy don't think this fa class was much. Definitely don't think we need Rolle, we have good safeties. Dansby is the only guy that was worth a lot IMO, and I can see why they didn't feel the need to bid high for him.
The real test to see if things have changed is when a trade is made. Will they value picks & will they drive a hard bargain?

Thanks, but the "issues " ...your word not mine are fixable and not a reason of panic(or hope to opponents)for the Giants.Yup they gave up 40 3 times last year lets look at the IR roster for the Giants,Goff will be fine at Mlber, just keeping our D line healthy, plus the addition of Rolle and we win half of what we lost. Please feel free to underestimate wether Rolle can help or not ,please keep telling yourself these things if it helps you sleep better at night.

Many people, and not just people here, are assuming that the Rolle signing signals that Phillips is done.
Like who, let's remeber what happens when we ........assume.:laughing-
53Fan 03-07-2010, 02:43 PM Aren't you going to complain about your owner driving prices up Giantone? You complain about Snyder doing it.

You must not have been paying attention to that post.Look up where it is I talk about PSL's and new stadiums and such and see if I don't bitch about the Giants ownership.

Let's see, the Giants just paid big bucks for a free safety when they already had one. If you can't do the math on that one, I can.

Actually telling myself that the Giants will suck next year does make me sleep better. And if you think the Giants can make the leap from giving up 40 points 3 times and nearly 30 per game(okay, 26.7 to be exact), good luck with that. Rolle is good but he ain't great, and the Giants just made him the highest paid safety of all time.
This is their third defensive coordinator in as many years and I know you threw out Goff's name, but I'm not so sure it's clear who the middle guy is going to be him or Blackburn. These aren't just "fixable"...your word not mine, solutions.
