Plus I think he got majorly coached up by Green. If I recall Smoot had a rough first year then worked all summer with Green and came out gang busters after that.

We should have asked Green if he wanted to be a coach for the Skins.

I don't think Smoot had a rough first year. Maybe in the first part when they went 0-5, but I think by the end of the year he was considered one of the bright spots

I don't have time to watch this as I have a class coming up but if anyone wants to tell me what the rookie verdict on Smoot was then I'd appreciate it.

Must be like Dennis Rodman and his tattoos...gets one in every city he visits throughout his career.

Soon he'll catch up to Travis Henry's 11 kids to 10 moms (one set of twins threw off the ratio).

You're right, I couldn't name them I'm sure but my analysis is they are serviceable CB but lack a certain characteristic (hands, elite speed, loose hips) of elite-outstanding CB, teams will tend to throw to their side more than the other and they are beaten for TD more frequently than their opposite CB. I think we can all agree that Rogers fits comfortably into that criteria.

Look, it's not an insult to call someone a bonafide starter in the NFL, it's just that I consider Rogers on the middle-lower end of starting CB in the league.
I'd put him in the top 15-20 CBs probably, he does definitely have plenty of room to improve. Maybe one of the unofficial stats guys can help us out with some numbers.

That's really high praise for someone that's been benched at some point 2 of the last 3 seasons and has 6 INT in 5 years.

Whose class would you put him in? The Revis-Woodson class? The Samuel-Winfield class? Who would you consider his peers in the 15-20 range?

more like the cromartie-robinson class, which I guess could take him out of the 15-20 range

last year singled out I probably wouldn't put him in top 20, but still starting quality.. before that maybe in the al harris, sheldon brown type range

I like Rogers when he is allowed to play to his strengths . Rogers was taken to be like a Nate Clements type CB and if anything Rogers is more physical than Clements .

Saying Rogers has always had an issue with every coaching staff no matter who he has worked with is a little disingenuous because it is the same defensive coaching staff under Gibbs and under Zorn and I have to say there seemed to be an awful lot of unhappy campers on the D last year, there was a lack of cohesiveness and a lack of leadership ... I guess that's what happens when Blanche quits on you in week four ..

We should tender him and look to use him in a way that builds to his strengths . To me the lack of catches and ints is not as important for me as the number of catches he prevents . It is not as sexy a statistic but I would love to find somewhere which shows the number of 5+ catch / 100yard games a reciever had ....

These comments where posted via twitter by 106.7 dafan. Apparently they had a interview with Rogers, who now wants to be on the team. He was upset with the coaching staff and now that they are gone he wants to stay a skin...

“We were 6-2 in our first 8 games, and it was Carlos this and Carlos that. I was playing really good.” Rogers was referring to the first 8 games of the 2008 season under ex-head coach Jim Zorn and with Blache running the defense.

“Then in the 2nd Half – we bring in D-Hall and (Shawn) Springs gets healthy — and me and Smootie (Fred Smoot) get pushed back. We were carrying the team!”

Rogers described how they gave up on Smoot in the Giants game at home on a sloppy day, and even though he was matching up and shutting down top receivers, eventually the decision was made to remove Rogers from the starting lineup.

“They didn’t even tell me,” Rogers said. “Jerry (Gray) had told me they were thinking about a change, but I was practicing with the 1’s, I warmed up with the 1’s that day (in Cincinnati) and then they told me in the tunnel.”

Rogers said he had an ally in Gray, who always fought for his guys. “Jerry said he went to Coach Zorn and Blache, and told them they were making dumb moves.” Gray is now in Seattle, Springs spent last year in New England and Blache is retired but to close the book on Zorn’s first year, Rogers simply said “Everyone knew Springs was Blache’s boy.”

heard stuff like that happened all too often

^ Interesting stuff Tryfuhl. The remark about Springs being Blache's boy rings true to the impression I have of him. Personally I'm glad Blache is gone. He was stuck in his system and it's time for change. I'd like someone who adjusts the system to the talent on the team and starts guys on merit, not favoritism.

I would be totally pissed off at coaches if they did to me, just like what the coaches did to Rogers.. It does influence your mental set; once you know that your coaches don't have faith in you, you lose the confidences..

I hope Rogers will show his abilities all year long for next season - enough to warrant an extension contract.. I'm also glad to know that Rogers still knows that he DEFINITELY needs to continue working on catching balls..

Edit: I second what 53fan said..
