Shanahan has an "open mind" about Portis | ProFootballTalk.com (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/24/shanahan-has-an-open-mind-about-portis/).

CP and I were texting last night and he told me he wants to stay if the Skins will have him. Thinks the Skins are a playoff team and Campbell will have his best season as a pro.

Isn't Snyder's favorite player Clinton Portis? It wouldn't surprise me if Snyder lobbied hard on Clintons behalf to retain him on the roster.

i don't think allen or shanny care what snyder says about portis. whether portis stays or goes will not be snyders decission.

Charlie Casserly said he thinks if Portis comes in and hits the weight room and stays in shape he'll stay, if not, he's gone. He also said even though JC is not the usual type of QB in Shanny's system, Shanny has adjusted his offense to fit his QB in the past.

I have no problem with Portis the player. He's still only 28 years old, and he can still run.

I have a problem with the primadonna Portis:
- the one that criticizes teammates and coaches
- doesn't practice
- who has lost the support of the locker room

If he can fix those things, sure, we can keep him.

if we are financially tied to him regardless if he is with us or not, i think we may as well keep him. his legs will be fairly fresh compared to past seasons, and he is still our best option, or one of them.

Shannahan has an open mind all right. He can't wait to see what happens with the uncapped year so he can cut him. He traded him in his prime and I'd venture to say he wouldn't hesitate to cut an aging cancer like Portis.

Portis career is almost over as an every down back. The list is long of 29-30 year old backs with a lot of miles on them (Jamal Lewis, Edge, Earl Campbell, Eddie George, Emmitt Smith, more recently LT) that hit the wall.

Time to move on.

Am I right in saying that if he was cut during the uncapped year we'd be clear so to speak (and by that Snyder would payout his entire SB during that year but it would clear off the books and not cost against the cap in future years)?

If that's the case, cut Randle El, Randy Thomas, Smoot, Collins, Betts and Portis.

Do we have to pay Samuels if he retires?
