I am afraid to say everybody is missing the point. The desire to have a GM who is responsible for everything in the organization is being circumvented already. This is Dan's hire (Shanahan) and this will not be called out till the next season or the one after that is another failure. As fans many of us have expressed our views to have the owner step aside but it is clear that this is business as usual at Redskin Park.

Just curious what other peoples thoughts are on this. While I love that Shanahan is a discipline guided coach who generally has great offensive schemes he has a history of some bad things. Hiring the wrong Defensive Coordinator, only winning Super Bowls with a QB named Elway, and an ego the size of the Rocky Mountains.

He's coached a team to a Superbowl. That's a plus. He knows how to put together an OL and offensive scheme that allows for (it seems) almost any running back with minor talent to excel in. Perhaps we'll get Marshall, Shefter, Bailey for Cooley, Kelly and Rogers.

The only other person that Bruce Allen would hire besides Shanahan is Gruden, so this isin't really that big of a deal!

My biggest issue is the last 3 seasons that Shanny was at Denver he was
.500 and no playoffs

Let the griping commence!

Anyone who thinks that an owner is not involved in hiring of a coach needs to get over it. The Rooneys hired every one of their coaches. Bowlen hired/fired Shanahan. I can think of only one recent coach that was hired purely by the GM and that is Parcells/Sparano, but Parcells is that uniquely qualified individual to do that, and Miami's ownership was in tremendous flux at the time.

It has been clear that Bruce Allen is onboard and upbeat with this upcoming hire, and I believe that if it wasn't who he wanted he either would say no, or I'm outta here.

Well, I think that Bruce Allen was hired on the premise that Shannahan would be his coach. I think that Shanahan was decided before Allen was. In fact I think that had we had a little better year, we would have had Shannahan and Cerrato. So lets just be happy that we have a new GM and a highly respected coach assuming they hire him.

IIRC, it was Snyder who hired Gibbs, and not Cerrato in 2004....

I think the direction of this franchise would have been determined by whom ever made the decision on the next coach. I think there are only 3 to 4 names out there that would even have qualified for what the Redskins need. Cowher isn't coming back this year, Holmgren is in Cleveland(by the way, Zorn may end up there) and Chucky isn't coaching this year either. So whether Dan the man, or Bruce made the decision, it was going to be Shanahan.

Not to be an idiot here, but is this thread title implying that Shanahan has been hired? That's how it reads, but none of the discussion states that, nor do I see any other sources confirming this. Has it been confirmed or does the thread need to be renamed?
