Sad, sad day for the DC area. May he rest in peace.
DC Area broadcaster George Michael passes awayRedskins_P 12-24-2009, 12:05 PM Sad, sad day for the DC area. May he rest in peace. FRPLG 12-24-2009, 12:08 PM He was a DC institution. In 2007 they told him he had to let people on the sports staff go to save money so instead he quit to save more people their jobs. I am sure he was getting ready to say farewell soon but still he went to bat for his people in the best way possible. I am sure SS has some insight on him. mlmpetert 12-24-2009, 12:23 PM RIP. I remember watching The Sports Machine growing up. Awesome show, he was a great man. I think he did the Redskins Report too, maybe even some Redskin game announcing back in the day? He will be missed Southpaw 12-24-2009, 12:59 PM He was a DC institution. Agreed. I'm 31, and George Michael has been doing DC area sports and Redskins coverage for literally as far back as my memory goes. This news actually bums me out... over the mountain 12-24-2009, 01:47 PM im 31 too so the sports machine when i was a kid was the only thing even closely resembling today's version of sportscenter. my best memories of him was after a tyson ro big boxing match b/c his show was the only way to get caught up on what happened with video footage . . .this was before the internet. rip george. 44Deezel 12-24-2009, 01:51 PM Very sad. I loved GM. I especially remember taping the Sport's Machine plays of the year and watching them over and over again when I was a kid. He'd show hilarious clips from random sports events like Jack Russell Terrier racing. When I moved to Annapolis a 6 years ago, I originally had DirecTV hooked up, but replaced it immediately when I found out I couldn't get the DC local stations. The show I could not live without was Redskins Report. Cancer is a bitch. We need to find a cure for that shit! DynamiteRave 12-24-2009, 02:12 PM Man I was surprised to hear about this. I know he was kinda old, but he always seemed in good spirits, good health, etc. Man Redskins Report won't ever be the same... birdz4gibbs 12-24-2009, 02:13 PM rip george.. irish 12-24-2009, 02:20 PM George was a living legend. The Sports Machine was the precursor to ESPN's Sports Center and the countdown clock format used on PTI (and almost every other "debate" show now) was used on the buzzer beater part of his Full Court Press show long before PTI was even thought of. George was way ahead of his time and sports in DC hasnt been as good since he retired. He is missed. FRPLG 12-24-2009, 02:25 PM George was a living legend. He had a huge radio career before he switched to sports. His biggest asset was his ability to spot talent. NBC4 always had the best backup anchors in DC. |
