I've got a friend that works with the league on the business side who is a HUGE Raiders fan and knows more about football than almost anyone else I know. I asked him for a scouting report on Shanahallen.
He e-mailed me this morning with the following:
I loved Bruce Allen..... did a great job with the draft as well as signing free agents. Also a big plus.... knows how to work the cap. From what I remember the Raiders always seemed to be on the brink of going over, but he would get them under while still signing quality free agents.
As for Shanahan he is obviously a great offensive mind. He likes a mobile qb and loves to have a several running backs at his disposal. The one concern I have is his defenses were pretty bad the last few years in Denver.....they tried a lot of different defensive coordinators and personal, but nothing seemed to work. Overall if you do hire him I think its going to be a good move. He's well respected, has the rings, and is a proven winner.
Nothing groundbreaking although I was pleasantly surprised to read his assessment of Allen being so positive. I don't think the defensive issues that Shanny had in Denver will necessarily replicate here because we've got a solid core on that side of the ball..
That's really good to hear about BA. I'm looking forward to seeing him in action!

A) Where did you hear that Slowik plans on running a 3-4?
B) Carter would definitely not fit in it since he didn't fit in San Fran's 3-4 when they moved him to OLB, thats why he came to us.
C) Haynesworth can play NT or DE so thats not a problem, Orakpo IS a 3-4 OLB, Anthony montgomery could easily be a NT, Jarmon could possibly plan DE or Lorenzo could. Fletch and Rocky could easily be starting 3-4 MLB's. The biggest questions for us would be one of the DE spots and the other OLB. We could definitley switch to a 3-4 if you ask me.
A - It was reported in multiple outlets that Shanahan and Slowik have been sharing an office together researching the steelers and patriots 3-4/hybrid defenses and assembling a coaching staff. You could probably google it if you needed a source. i'm pretty sure it was mentioned here in this (or another similar) thread as well.
B- I agree Carter would not be good as a 3-4 linebacker but atleast he has experience there.
C - Fletchers got the speed to play ILB, but i think his size would really become a liability. You may be right about Rocky and Jarmon though. Not sure about the rest.
Either way, i think we'd need too adjust our defensive personnel much more to switch to a 3-4. if we stick with a 4-3, we really just need to move orakpo up front and get an OLB, free safety, and perhaps a corner. if we switch to a 3-4, we'd need atleast one more LB and DL player. and then compound the problem with everyone having to learn a completely new system.
our personnel is pretty well suited to a 4-3 right now. the problem we've had is that blache is a horrible coordinator that doesnt take advantage of his player's strengths.

I agree. I hope we don't switch to a 3-4. That would mean significant building on both sides of the ball.

I know ho everyone wants to get rid of portis but i think bruce could keep him around for another year if shanny comes, because he produced in that denver offense

Yup. AH thinks he has it bad now. As a 3-4 nose tackle...

This is from the Steel Curtain.....
“From ”http://twitter.com/Adam_Schefter" target="new">Adam Schefter Steelers Dir. of Football Ops Kevin Colbert took Mike Shanahan to lunch and set him up to study tape after. Steelers beyond accommodating."
And then this:
Adam_Schefter: Shanahan going to study Steelers for a few days, then on to New England to study the Pats. Learning from two of the best organizations.

How often do big time accommodations like this happen?

I say we should run a 3-4, It couldn't hurt seeing that we have the players that can do it.

You'd play Fat Al at NT?
