Paintrain 12-29-2009, 04:56 PM Pretty much. The rule will be made a mockery of, unfortunately, because you have such a small pool of good coaching candidates to begin with. Whittle that same pool down to an even smaller pool of maybe qualified black coaches, and you open it up to criticism.
Truth is the Rooney Rule is created for that one guy who turns out to be Joe Gibbs before he becomes Joe Gibbs. The downside is there aren't that many Joe Gibbs out there, so you have to sift through all the Jerry Grays of the NFL to satisfy some bullshit token rule.
If it was such a 'bullshit token rule' (which I find highly offensive BTW) then I'm sure the Steelers appreciate that 'bullshit token rule' because otherwise they wouldn't have interviewed Mike Tomlin. The Bears may not have interviewed Lovie Smith. Leslie Frazier may not be a hot candidate for jobs this year.
For those that think it's a 'bullshit token rule' tell that to Sherm Lewis, Marvin Lewis, Tony Dungy and plenty of the other coaches who weren't given a sniff for an interview for YEARS because the good old boy network was busy recycling the same names and faces over and over again.
It's really easy to sit on the perch of power and mock the lack of opportunity and delude yourself into believing a level playing field existed before the Rooney rule.
over the mountain 12-29-2009, 05:00 PM Isn't quoting yourself some kind of violation of message board etiquette? :oink:
If it were Dungy rumored to be coming, I don't think there would be much of a big deal at all. Honestly, I don't know why it's a big deal now. Everyone knows that Z is gone so who cares that Snyder is already interviewing people. If you're getting divorced but the court date hasn't arrived, is it cheating to take someone out to dinner?
nice analogy pain. to take it one step farther . .
if you're getting divorced but the court date hasnt arrived, is it okay for your best friend to go out with your soon-to-be-ex wife?
is it okay if your father was the one who secretly set up the date with your soon-to-be-ex wife and your best friend?
is it okay for your best friend to tell you to your face he didnt take out your soon-to-be-ex wife even though everyone else says he did?

might have actually been better of had they not interviewed him
Paintrain 12-29-2009, 05:01 PM god are team is such a fucking joke :)
Are we any more of a joke than the Dolphins were in '07 when Wayne Huzengia met on a tarmac with Bill Parcells for 3 hours when he had a coach and GM in place? Are we any more of a joke than the Falcons in '07 when they had a front office in place and Parcells was offered, accepted and then declined their President of Football Ops job? Damn guys, I know it's been rough this season but even when we're taking steps to get better some of you still bitch about it.

In the SNL voice of the "church Lady"...... yes it is. ;)
I agree with you 100% though. I think we all know Zorn is gone. He knows he gone. I think the owner was hoping at some point Zorn would quit and not have to pay him anymore and it didn't happen. The season was already gone so keep him or firing him would have not made a difference. I guess you all would have been more comfortable had DS fired Zorn and made Gray HC then conducted interviews or simply waited until the end of the season. I think DS just wanted to let Shanahan get a start on putting his team together behind the scene's so they can get all the players ready to jump on board when the season ends.

They went to the Super Bowl 3 years ago with Rex Freaking Grossman. I'd strongly beg to differ.

i'm just saying the team and front office in general over the past decade have been a joke and i would say we are worse off than any of the teams you listed. and with the :hitfan: as of late it just makes me sit back and get very apathetic and realize how much of a joke we are to the rest of the league

Ok, I see your point from Zorn's point of view. Does my best friend hit it, cause that's just wrong.
Look, it's FAR from ideal and maybe not the way that some of us would have handled it or would have seen to like it handled if it were us but let's not act like it's the first time it's happened. I'm sure in Buffalo, there was at least some conversation with Fewell before Jauron was let go along the lines of 'if we make a change at the HC position would you be interested?'

I went a little too far with the word bullshit. My apologies. But it is bullshit that the Redskins had already determined that Shanny would be the coach no matter what and in order to satisfy a rule to interview a black candidate, Jerry Gray was interviewed. In my estimation that is bullshit. Either keep the leaks under wraps or wait until the end of the season to handle your business. So while you take offense to the my characterization of the rule, I take offense to the process and how a black coach was interviewed knowing full well he wasn't being considered for the damn job in the first place.

he won when he first got there, the past three years one winning season of 9-7, i'm just saying he is no mike tomlin and i was joking when i made the initial comment, since they are now talking about getting rid of him
