SFREDSKIN 12-18-2009, 12:12 PM Didn't Jim Caldwell have the Indi job handed to him on a plate?
Shouldn't they have had to interview a non-minority candidate? :)
I guess you could say the same thing in Seattle were Jim Mora Jr. was named the successor before Holmgren was gone.
Chico23231 12-18-2009, 12:13 PM I would be shocked if he fired Blache. The biggest qusestion I have is would Blache want to continue to coach.
Blache seems so hard to gauge with the way he acts. Doesnt want to talk to the media b/c he is fed up...but comes to the defense of his Owner and then talks about the love he has for his players in regards to the probowl. I remember hearing several years ago he had to be talked back into staying in Washington and was going to retire. I would like him to stay, I like his ass kicking approach to the players, even if it ruffles some feathers (Carlos)...And Dan Snyder seems to love the guy
BigHairedAristocrat 12-18-2009, 12:15 PM Look, people are looking at Shanahan just as a coach, but also look at some of the players he's drafted the past few years, All Pro LT Ryan Clady, Jay Cutler, Eddie Royal,
Brandon Marshall, Tony Scheffler, Ryan Harris (starting RT), Elvis Dumervil, Domenik Hixon (now of the Giants), Dominique Foxworth, the late darrent williams, and DJ Williams. Thats from 2004 to 2008. Thats pretty damn good team of players if you ask me.
He's definitely got a good track record and i think, if hired, his record is much more relevent than Allen's alleged record. I'm really hoping JLC's report that we're looking at bringing in DeCosta is true as well.
I only really have two concerns with Shanahan has our HC
1) his lines in denver were always the smaller, more agile type and i'm not sure that type of line would hold up well in this division.
2) He'll get rid of our defensive staff and system and our defenses will be as instable as his were in Denver. If Shanahan can somehow be convinced to keep our system in place with either Blache or Gray as coordinator, and Shanahan sticks to running the offense (our defenses have pretty much had full autonomy for most of the past decade), then we're not far off from being a truly great team again.
SFREDSKIN 12-18-2009, 12:18 PM I think the Shanahan ("The Rat" look when he smiles, Raiders call him that) rumor is pretty much a done deal, the move to get Bruce Allen with 3 games left on the season is to get a jump on someone like the Cowboys who are also rumored to be enamored with Shanahan. Probably after they play SD, as soon as the game is over, Zorn is fired and Shanahan is named HC. That's my theory.

One thing you can't argue is Denver's ability to run the ball. I would think it would be a major upgrade for us. We haven't been real consistent in that dept although we've had some good years. Denver's been pretty good in that dept no matter the division.
vallin21 12-18-2009, 12:24 PM If we get Shanahan, he'll definetely bring his guys to coach the O. He'd be smart not to mess with our D but as BHA pointed out, his DC's come and go. If he doesn't, Blache, depending on if he still wants to coach is our DC, if not it's Gray. Very simple

Thats true, but the redskins face much stronger and bigger defensive lines, so i'm somewhat concerned. I wonder how many running backs we'll take in the draft if Shanahan's hired. I don't see him being very happy with the depth we have here.

Rooney rule I don't think applies to a coach in waiting situation
Longtimefan 12-18-2009, 12:27 PM Rooney Rule=Equal Employment Opportunity Every job you apply to has this rule, so therefore same thing goes for the NFL.
EEO is Rooney Rule=Affirmative Action. The intent of the rule is designed to obtain a fair and unbiased result, the problem is, there's no safeguard in place to ensure the rule is fairly implemented. If an owners heart is unfair, you can change the rule, make new rules, but rules can't change the heart.
SBXVII 12-18-2009, 12:52 PM The Rooney Rule is garbage.... no one says we should try out white RBs before we sign a black one....its a freaking joke. The NFL is about winning, if an owner is still dumb enough to NOT hire the best coach for the job regardless of color his record will prove his incompitence. The rule is insulting and demeaning.
I was thinking the same thing but couldn't put into words.
I often wondered why minorities and non minorities don't get upset about affirmative action. To me it send two negative messages:
1) The Gov. is applying a rule that discriminates against non minorities.
2) It sends a message that minorities can't get a job based on their own qualifications. If I was a minority I think I would be mad that I was given the job solely because the business needed to hire a minority vs. me being better qualified then the other applicants and getting the job due to hard work and diligence.
I do understand that there are lots and lots of instances where minorities are discriminated against because they are a minority, and they don't get the job even though they are the better candidate.
I don't know. I don't mean to piss people off but the message just seems bad. (A) We will discriminate against non minorities in order to correct a wrong against minorities, and (B) The Gov. is calling minorities inferior and making a law to level the playing field. I know the law was put in place to combat discrimination but it should be changed to either protect all americans no matter what color or nationality or eliminate it all together. If we keep the law then tweek it so the business or whoever is punished severely for their discrimination.
but as someone else said ...in the NFL its kinda the old boys club and they would interview the janitor and say we interviewed someone to satisfy the rule instead of actually interviewing a qualified candidate or they would interview a qualified applicant to only give it to who they want to be their next GM or HC. The law only says they have to interview someone not that they have to be qualified or seriously considered.
