First person I thought of was you when I heard about Allen. I honestly didn't think it would happen. I heard earlier this week the following a) Cerrato was offered the chance to remain part of the organization but was told he would no longer be in charge of football operations. I got the impression he was going to accept that b) Either Scott Campbell would be promoted to GM or Bruce Allen would be named GM c) if it was Campbell expect the Cowher rumors (as President/HC) to get serious and a fall-back option was to go after Brian Schottenheimer d) if it was Allen expect the Shanahan rumors to almost certainly be a lock (again as President/GM) e) it was leaning toward Campbell

Huh???
So what is Allen's role then?

The text I just got from the Redskins says Allen will replace Cerrato as "team VP." Can we please just call him GM?

From what SS is saying, the GM role could still go to Shanahan

That's funny...only way this could be more perfect for me is if Gruden had not signed that new contract with your ESPN boys or if there was a way out of it. So you think Allen as VP & GM increases the chances of landing Shanahan? I was thinking that it would lower the chances since Shanahan would report to Allen unless they gave Shanahan the President title I guess.

Let's all clear this up...there's no way in hell Gruden's contract precludes him from taking a football job. Not in any obstructive way.

We may not hire someone with the title of GM...we haven't had one. So Allen could be Vinny's direct replacement in job duties? With Shanny as the head coach with some input in the personnel decisions?

I'd hope and expect that Allen and Shanahan would work TOGETHER as opposed to the HC trying to control the team completely. That usually doesn't end well, but I'd have more faith in Shanahan than Holmgren to succeed in the dual role.

With this speculation, I'd still love to get Gruden despite his ESPN contract.

Smoot, if Allen is GM, why does that make Shanahan almost a lock? I thought Shanahan would want total control.
