Before you judge Trotter, remember...a bad Dline makes backers look terrible.

VERY true. Not only that, a horribly inexperienced defensive coordinator like George Edwards with his 'freelancing linebacking' didn't help either.

If any other teams were looking at signing Pierce to an offer sheet wouldn't we have heard about it by now???

I would think Pierce is the last of our RFAs you need to worry about signing with another team. That said, I don't know if there's a final date for signing RFAs. I only know you have seven days to match the offer.

We should know by Friday night or Saturday morning if the Rams haven't matched the offer for Jeremetrius Butler.

Hmmm...ESPN is reporting that the Giants cut Barrow, their middle linebacker. Any scouting stats on him? Might he be a possibility for the 'skins?

I totally agree, on so many plays I saw Trot getting held up by 1 or 2 olinemen or backs (guys that should have been trying to contain our dlinemen). MLB is a position that is VERY dependant upon the quality of the Dlinemen (more so than for OLBs).

It would be a big mistake to get rid of Trotter.

It takes a full year to recover from ACL/MCL tears. Trotter has also been in 3 D systems in as many years with the 'Skins (that's another reason why Arrington hasn't been as great as he should be). Cutting Trotter would also give us a sh-tload of dead money in 2005 (what $5 million? - that's two very good players or a slew of decent ones).

Finally, that's a great point re: freelancing. Before last season Edwards wanted Trotter to freelance and then he wanted to reign him in......I'm not sure Edwards knew what he wanted from Trotter & Arrington.

Keep Trotter.

Lots of linebackers and only a few DL could mean that the defensive coordinator wants to use a 3-4 defense.

BUT:

The 3-4 defense demands a nose tackle that can hold his ground against the center and often with a double team block from a guard. If the nose tackle can be "pushed around", the 3-4 is much less effective.

I know that folks here like to think that anyone in the Redskins training camp is a real Hall of Fame candidate and only conspiracies by the league and jealous journalists from other cities keep them out. But can someone tell me who on the roster at the moment fits the description of the "immovable object" as the nose tackle? The first person who mentions Lionel Dalton will be assigned to write on a blackboard 500 times:

"I must stop eating hallucingenic mushrooms."

If the Skins are going to play a lot of 3-4 defense, they will have to find a "wide body" somewhere to play the nose tackle. Ted Washington might have fit that bill but he is already signed in Oakland - and he is very long in the tooth. Gilbert Brown is a free agent - I think - but he is not likely to be able to play 16 games. I did not see any college linemen who even came close to looking as if they were ready for that kind of duty next year.

This may not be an easy thing for the Skins to do in 2004.
