We all know Snyder is going to PURSUE a big name HC. The question is, will we find one willing to come here? Right now, Shanahan is the only one who hasnt essentially closed the door 100% on coaching the skins. And I personally don't think Shanahan will come here. So where does that leave us?

Brian Billick!...seriously though, Marty Schottenheimer....honestly though, Joe Gibbs...no lie, Pete Carroll...in all seriousness, Pat Summit

My very first post so I will try and not embarrass myself. In patrolling several boards and the topic of the next coach, there appears to be one name that continues to be missing.

While I think we can all agree that the front office is a complete farce and the general feeling is that Snyder wants a "name" coach, there seems to be a feeling that the name coaches are kind of saying "no thanks".....Cowher this week, Holmgren and the Hawks/Browns, Gruden and ESPN, etc, etc. The one successful coach that continues to be missing is Mike Martz. I lived in St. Louis when he was the OC and the head coach and the guy was crazy but an excellent coach that produced some very good teams. He turned in fairly successful stints as the OC in Detroit and San Francisco until Mike Singeltary decided on a different offense.

Martz clashed with the front office in STL because of the incompetence of some of the people there. Wilbon has stated several times that he believes Snyder will do one more hire before finally getting things right and getting the right front office structure in place. I personally would take the flier on Martz for his outstanding record as a head coach. Plus, I think he would put the screws to the front office and then finally, maybe, Snyder will realize his errors. Schottenheimer did it and he is the only coach, albeit for 1 season, that Snyder hired that had a .500 or better record with the Skins.

Welcome to the board. Nice first post. Martz also has a history here in Washington. I think he's innovative but maybe not a great choice for a head coach. As I understand it he's clashed nearly everywhere he's gone. Not just St. Louis.

Anyhow, I think Martz is probably a name that will be considered sort of as a back-up option here. But more likely I think his best opportunity to be a head coach would be someplace like Cleveland and Buffalo. But even with all that said, his real value is an offensive coordinator. And I think that's how he will return to the NFL. Could be to one of the teams mentioned, could be to Chicago or somewhere else but I think his best bet is an OC.

To follow the Martz idea, has anyone mentioned Dick Jauron?

I watched buffalo a few times during his tenure there & it seemed he really got a lot out of a talent challenged team. They always played hard & were tough to beat.

The front office in STL worked completely against each other (major infighting) during Martz's time. His head coaching record is outstanding and I was not his biggest fan but it is hard to argue with the results he produced. In each stop in Detroit and SF, his offense improved dramatically from the year prior to him.

If Lovie Smith stays in Chicago, I could see him helping his old friend out there as OC since Ron Turner is well, let's say not good.

I am just disgusted that this conversation even exists. I think Zorn has some faults but has shown signs of improvement given some of the garbage he was given by the front office. I still don't know what coach in their right mind would think the Redskins and the current front office structure is a great opportunity. Schottenheimer made some pretty good comments yesterday about Cerrato and it probably isn't a stretch to say more NFL people respect Marty than Cerrato but at least Snyder likes Cerrato. Right? Because that relationship has worked out so well for us. Right? Ha.

Also, has Dennis Green considered coming back to the sideline?

No one will be willing to take the job as long as VC is still with the team. I heard on the Junkies today that Marty is now being more vocal about his situation here with the Skins. Supposedly VC came to him mad and told him when he was first hired that Snyder maybe listening to him (Marty) about on the field stuff but Snyder would listen to him (Cerrato) about everything else. Then Cerrato was fired. Marty stayed the year and left and guess what Cerrato was brought back.

I honestly don't know what Snyder see's in Cerrato. The Skins are the but of most owners jokes simply cause we have Cerrato screwing everything up.

and another thing, we have a bad ending to the season last yr and only a few people chimed in that Zorn/Cerrato must go. This yr we start out bad at the begining of the yr and everyone is chanting Vinny and Zorn must go. Left with mediocracy long enough and some of you guys are wore down all ready. "Oh it's not that bad", "It's all about consistancy", "We should keep Zorn", "If Cerrato stays I'll be all right with it." On and on.

I know we might not have much control over those things but no Cerrato needs to go. If we are going to look into picking up anyone worth their weight in gold then Cerrato needs to go. Pick up someone else who either has a track record for building good teams and pay them a mint or look for the next up and commer. The only way any good HC is going to finally take the Skins job is if they completely understand Cerrato is not here or has no (none) control with anything player related. Well other then maybe contracts.

when I saw those marty comments I wondered if maybe, just maybe, that would get to Danny & cause him some regret, or at least some reflection on how his relationship w/vinny may have hindered the team. Sometimes it takes a guy like Marty to say something like that before it hits home.

Hopefully Marty just did us all a big favor!

welcome to the board. I wouldnt having Martz around as an OC, but i wouldnt want him as a HC... and one fo the reasons is exactly what you mention - it would end up being another Shottenheimer-esque fiasco. Our next head coach needs to be someone who'll actually be able to stick around here for a while.

Honestly, I think Snyder's one and only focus is Shanahan. I think he'll do everything he possibly can to get Shanahan in D.C. I don't think he even has a "plan B" yet and I think that could put us in a bind later on. I fully expect a long and drawn out head coaching search with no changes to the front office structure and a new head coach that leaves all of us feeling disappointed.

I would agree that vinny needs to go, or at least that a real GM w/separation of powers needs to be put in place. I don't think it's fair to say Zorn must go at this point. Let him finish the year & see if he can get some wins. He's improving as a coach IMO.
