Hello All,
Well it certainly seems like we are in for a long season. Looking at the game last week, I thought it was another pathetic performance and a loss that shouldn’t have been. It’s hard to keep saying these are losses that shouldn’t have been and that this team should be 4-2 and 5-1 at this point… but that maybe the cards we’ve been dealt with our talent on the offensive side of the football. This team very well could win just one more game all season long, which an absolute shame considering the defense they have right now. I know they give up a few big plays here and there, but it’s very hard to be upset with the defense at this point. Its very rare that a team has the #4 defense in the league and still be 2-4… It’s funny that the last team I can remember with that distinction was the 2004 Redskins.
Looking at Clinton Portis and weather he is on borrowed time in Washington? I think a lot of guys are on borrowed time in Washington. This franchise has hit the point where it is time to rebuild. I still have a hard time getting upset with Clinton Portis given the makeshift offensive line, but he has to be better. On the big run last week, I don’t understand why Portis did not cut back behind his blocker and chose to run through is blocker at the end of the play. That was an easy 6, which ended up being a huge momentum swing in the game when the Redskins scored just 3. Another interesting stat is when running backs have 300 carries, like Portis did last season, they really start to fall off from there, and I think Portis needs to get away from being the power back he is trying to be and become more of a scat back. With this offensive line, he’s going to have a hard time getting anything going.
Looking at the benching of Jason Campbell and why it happened and what it proved? I think the only thing that it proved was to the fans that Todd Collins is not a savior sitting on the bench. Jason Campbell is not the problem and you can’t have a franchise guy sitting on the bench in that situation. The fact that Campbell has the numbers he did coming into the Kansas City game is amazing. I am surprised that Campbell was still throwing for 300+ yards and still had people complaining that he was not doing a good job. I still am very high on Jason this season, but I think he’ll probably be on the way out. I think the problems offensively start with the offensive line and their ability to run the football to open up the pass. Stephon Heyer is not a good run blocker and maybe its because I was a big fan of Jon Jansen, but I think it was a mistake letting him go. Heyer got blown up on the safety against Carolina two weeks ago, and was a big part of the one this week. To be quite frank, the line is pitiful right now. It was in trouble before Thomas and Samuels went out and its just pitiful now.
Furthermore, looking at the 2008 second round receivers: I think its too early to label them a bust, but they have not been able to make the transition into the NFL and their time is running out. Really, everyone in the organization needs to take a look in the mirror and figure out what is going on. Look at the kid from Philadelphia, DeSean Jackson, who was a second rounder picked after these guys who is tearing it up in the NFL. If you take a look around the league, there are second rounders all over the league who are absolute stars, and the Redskins have these three who are on the bench or doing next to nothing. When I really think about it, I can’t think of a single second rounder for the Redskins who is making a big impact anywhere on the field. This all starts with the front office and the people making the decisions. I think if this team doesn’t win the next two games, or at least 3 of the next 4, its time to start playing all the young guys and seeing what the team has. I don’t understand why Marko Mitchell has been kept inactive every week, while the guys who are on the field are not doing anything anyways. The team is going to start having to look ahead really soon and see what type of young guys they have on this team.
This leads well into the next question of how I would rebuild the team? I would start by blowing this team up and starting over. This team has not gone through a real rebuilding process since 2004, and they need to do it in even more drastic fashion. I would start getting rid of all the older veterans, taking the time to see what they have in the young guys. Finally, get a general manager in here and build this team the right way. They have ignored the line to go after bigger “star power” type guys and they need to get the lines established and things will take care of themselves from there. You can have marginal players making big plays behind very good offensive and defensive lines. I think either way, Jim Zorn is out at the end of the season. I think he is in a bad situation, but he did not help matters by trying to build these players around his system instead of his system around the players. I bring in a general manager who does the search for the head coaching position, and start to build this team from the ground up. You see teams can turn it completely around in only a couple of years, and I hope that’s what we see in Washington.
