Joe Gibbs could be taking a Tuna-style role in D.C. | ProFootballTalk.com (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/10/22/joe-gibbs-could-be-taking-a-tuna-style-role-in-dc/)
Joe Gibbs could be taking a Tuna-style role in D.C.
As the Washington Redskins continue to quickly unravel, the man who delivered the team's only three Super Bowl trophies could soon be coming back.
Again.
There's a rumor making the rounds that two-time former head coach Joe Gibbs could be returning in a role similar to the one occupied by Bill Parcells in Miami. Gibbs would be responsible for hiring a G.M. and a head coach, and otherwise stabilizing the franchise without grinding away as a head coach.
We reported earlier this month that owner Daniel Snyder still consults with Gibbs, and that the two men had dinner in Charlotte the night before the Redskins' loss to the Panthers.
For now, it's just a rumor. And it possibly flows from the fact that it makes a lot of sense.
Then again, the fact that it makes so much sense probably means it won't happen.
Please be true.

Giving this the 60% accuracy test for anything PFT related, I'd be fine with this move. As long as he's not making the personnel decisions himself, that could be a good thing because the one person we know that Snyder won't overstep his bounds on is Gibbs.

While I love Gibbs and DS could do worse I really feel the game has past by Gibbs. Bill Parcells never really left football so its a much different situation.

NO, NO, NO! How many times do we have to switch offensive philosophies? I love Joe Gibbs, but I want to keep the memories that I have of him as fond ones. I want to continue trying to implement the "WCO" not the "Air Correyell offense"
Well, I guess it's better that what we have, but it is not exactly what I had in mind for the team from my own fan perspective.

For me, as long as he comes in as basically a mediator, I'm all for it. He might not be the greatest talent evaluator in the world, but he's a hell of a team builder.

Wow, I dont know how I feel about this....
A part of me is thrilled because anything beats VC. But at the same time Gibbs 2.0 wasn't so hot in player eval IMO. maybe if Gibbs only focuses on that role, it would be ok. But, on the other hand, wouldnt he just get a bunch of "smash-mouth" players catered for the triple TE formation?

You nailed it on the head. Having Gibbs in the role would also add legitimacy to our front office and make it more likely that a respectable coach and GM would WANT to come here - something I highly doubt would happen otherwise. Gibbs would also create a nice "buffer" between the Coach/GM and Snyder - something that would also make those jobs more attractive. I think the move might even be enough to get Cowher to take us off his black list.

I'd thought of this possibility myself. I know, or should I say I believe, Gibbs would not want to coach again at his age. But the one thing he didn't really succeed in was nfl mgmt.
Don't get me wrong, I think Gibbs II was great for this franchise, but he was part of some terrible moves, loyd, arch, trading picks, etc. He got us to the playoffs twice, which is more than we'd seen since he left the first time, but he probably would still love to prove that he could manage a team.

I hope this isn't true.
Being that Gibbs also trades away draft picks for aging guys I'm not too excited about this. I like the team president approach though.
This sounds like a Snyder move to get fans back in his corner but still gives him influence over our roster.
He's not a good candidate being that he had involvement in poor front office decisions in the past. He's also way too butt-buddy with Snyder to not have his decisions be affected by Snyder.
Bad move but I bet that casual Skins fans are licking it up right now. I'd hate to see Gibbs be Snyder's fall guy.
