skinsguy 10-22-2009, 01:31 PM Question: From what it sounds like in the article, Joe wouldn't be making the draft or coaching decisions. He'd get a GM and leave most of the big choices up to whoever that might be. Is that what y'all got out of it?
What Sayeth The Mob?
EXACTLY!!!!!! Joe Gibbs would be President of Football Operations, NOT the GM. The GM would be responsible for making the player personnel decisions.
skinsguy 10-22-2009, 01:34 PM Okay, if that's the case then why do we need Joe Gibbs to oversee the player operation if he's not going to be hands on? Why bring him here at all? I would think there are other football minds who are more familiar with the current landscape of assistant coaches and GMs that are ready and capable to take the next step.
Joe Gibbs just seems removed and detached, until Danny calls him, from the day-to-day goings on of the NFL. I'm certain there's a flow of information and exchange that you're only privy to because you're plugged in. That's something you can't just jump in and out of and get real feel for.
I guess to make my point more clear, SmootSmack works for ESPN. I'll bet when goes on vacation and returns to work, all kinds of shit has gone on behind the scenes around the league that he's not up to speed on. And we're just talking about a week.
As far as Parcells not being GM, wasn't it his choice to cut ties with Jason Taylor and then bring him back into the fold? That sounds like GM to me.
Who would you honestly rather have to deal with directly? Vinny Cerrato or Daniel Snyder, or Joe Gibbs?
artmonkforhallofamein07 10-22-2009, 01:35 PM If Joe were to take the job, would we see the return of Charlie Casserly as GM perhaps?
irish 10-22-2009, 01:35 PM I wouldn't want JG picking our draft picks either. What I think would be best for Joe would be for him to pick a good GM. It's obvious that Dan cannot.
That makes me wonder . . . .
I understand Gibbs wouldnt be picking players but I doubt he's plugged into who the new GM talent is and who are the hot young coaching prospects.
I tend to think this is Gibbs way of making ammends because he left DS in a lurch by leaving early. Had he fulfilled his contract Zorn wouldnt have been the coach.
I also think this is another PR stunt by DS. He know 90% of the Skins fanbase would like this move and it would be some positive news for the Skins.
I really wonder if there is anyone else besides Gibbs who would even take this job.

Honestly, none of them. And this might completely shock some people here, but if I had to choose between Cerrato and Gibbs on a football level today. Right now. It would be Cerrato hands down. I'm talking about take the emotion of meeting Joe Gibbs out of it, I would rather deal with Cerrato.
You just can't replace "right now" knowledge in the NFL. That's Danny's big blind spot and it's hurting this team badly. He's called in Sherm Lewis and now, possibley, Joe Gibbs - again. He seems to believe that success in the past is transferable to today's NFL culture. It isn't.

I was thinking the same thing, although I would much prefer someone like Bobby Beathard.

Why can't we see that around here?
sandtrapjack 10-22-2009, 01:46 PM Additionally, if this rumor is true and has legs, it means that not only Zorn getting his walking papers, but probably Cerratto too.
Sounds like Gibbs would be able to hire not only a coach, but a GM as well,
irish 10-22-2009, 01:49 PM Why can't we see that around here?
Because they like the idea of getting the old band back together and re-creating the glory days. It didnt work last time and it aint gonna work this time.

It's not about Joe Gibbs having any more or less knowledge about today's NFL as it is mostly a PR move. Knowing how Vinny Cerrato works, there is no way I would ever work for someone like that. And believe me, most of the decent and great football minds out there are more than likely saying the same thing. However, if they know that someone like Joe Gibbs would be there to report to, then I can see some of those most sought out candidates be willing to accept that situation rather than to have Vinny being the guy they report to.
Again, we don't even know this is going to be true or not.
