12thMan 10-22-2009, 12:41 PM I really hope this isn't true. Why is that we seem to turn to Gibbs with this spare tire mentallity? I couldn't care less what title they give him. And someone please tell me what does a team president do for the Washington Redskins? Another title with no ideas behind it.
Stop playing games Danny.
I hate to be this cynical, and if it's indeed true, this smacks of a ploy by Snyder to appease the fans emotionally and make sure there is no drop off in attendence. Gibbs' ideas aren't any fresher now than they were when he left the second time. This franchise and these fans need to stop worshipping at the altar of Joe Gibbs and move on. Joe had his day, and we will be forever grateful, but let's stop pretending Joe Gibbs will wave some magic wand and suddenly the offensive line will be better and Portis' ankles will be healed. Let's stop tinkering around the edges and blow this team up.
skinsfan69 10-22-2009, 12:42 PM the thing is snyder doesn't need gibbs to hire football people. there are guys out there that can do the job and all he has to do is pick up the phone.
skinsfan_nn 10-22-2009, 12:44 PM I can only dream of Joe coming back to DC to run this organization! I hope there is some credibility to this rumor.

Exactly. That's why this move makes no sense to me. I hope the fans don't buy this bull.
SC Skins Fan 10-22-2009, 12:44 PM From Jason Reid:
Source doubts a Gibbs return
There's buzz at Pro Football Talk about the possibility of Joe Gibbs returning to the Redskins in advisory/consultant role -- but not as a head coach.
Gibbs had dinner with owner Daniel Snyder in Charlotte before the Redskins lost to the Carolina Panthers and any interaction between those two naturally would stir talk. A person close to Gibbs, however, recently told me that he seriously doubted that Gibbs would return to the Redskins in any role because of everything he has going on with his racing team and family. The person maintained that stance in a text message I received minutes ago.
Just in terms of the things I know about, Gibbs has NASCAR, his son Coy's motocross team, the Game Plan For Life ministry and his grandkids. I don't think that would leave a lot of time for helping Snyder hire a new general manager and a new coach. That is, if that's Snyder's intention.
Of course, things could always change. And Snyder has enough money to persuade people to reverse course. But it seems that Joe Jackson Gibbs is busy elsewhere at the moment.
Does that actually seem like a compelling argument? If Gibbs wanted the position there would clearly be time for him to do it. JGR, and everything else, continued on when he was head coach. Obviously he would not be in Charlotte to do day-to-day stuff, but I don't know how much of that he does anyway. The question is only if he wants the job and wants to re-commit to the Redskins at his age and station in life. Those things JLC mentions are not reasons that would keep him away if he actually wanted to return. I'm not really sure why he would, but he does seem like the only person capable of mitigating Dan Snyder's destructiveness/bullying tendencies.
SmootSmack 10-22-2009, 12:45 PM Yeah unless he just brings in the GM and head coach and lets them take over everything while he has basically a figurehead/occasional consultant role with the title of President.
I can see it now. President Joe Gibbs, GM Doug Williams, Assistant GM Lionel Vital, Head Coach Russ Grimm, Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles, Offensive Coordinator (insert name that I can't think of right now)
A part of me suspects though this is a story planted by the Redskins themselves to get fans, if only temporarily, a bit excited in the midst of all this negative news

Good point. Except Snyder has never been willing to make the call and at this point I think those individuals would not pick up when they saw a 703 area code on the caller ID. The first part of that statement is why I would be skeptical even if Gibbs returned. I am a huge fan, but I just have trouble believing that Snyder will ever completely divorce himself from football operations.

I think this is a trial balloon, so to speak. I think it was leaked on purpose to see what the response would be.
JoeRedskin 10-22-2009, 12:50 PM Given Joe's other commitments, I seriously doubt he is coming back in any type of full time role. My hope, however, is that DS's dinner w/ Joe went something like this:
DS: Joe, my front office is a shambles - I trusted Vinny and he just doesn't have it. I need to assemble a new management team. Will you help me do that?
JG: Dan, I would like to help but I can't run the team for you. If you want, I will help you assemble a solid managment team including someone to be the final arbiter of football decisions.
DS: Okay Joe, that works for me.
SBXVII 10-22-2009, 12:53 PM If true I don't see how this could be a bad thing? Gibbs has said in the past that he would like a front office type of job and get away from the mundane part of everyday coaching. Gibbs is a respected person throughout football who might be able to bring certain people to the table ie; GM or HCing candidates that otherwise might not be available if we kept Cerrato or if DS tried to go out and locate someone himself.
I think he might do a good job at locating a GM to run things and between Gibbs and whoever is GM I think they both would most likely find a decent HC.
None of this has anything to do with what "scheme" we are going to run. Most teams use similar plays anyway no matter what the scheme, they just use different terminology. Plus I would not have a doubt that Gibbs would not have good HCing candidates in mind no matter what scheme they use.
