The tripple option is only a good offense if you are playing with the lead and can play great defense. GT was not doing anything special besides playing keep away. If the Hokies could have capitalized earlier and had the lead going into the half, it would have been a much different ball game. Essentially that one scoring drive off of that one big pass play in the first half was the difference. 9 times out of 10 VT would have won that game. It was just GT's day. I effin hate GT more than I hate Miami.
I've also heard it called the "option spread". It's interesting to watch. What's amazing is that the whole world knows what GT is going to do, but they can't stop it. You're right though, if they fall behind like they did against Miami, or get into third and long, it's a tough offense to have.
