skinsguy 10-16-2009, 11:23 AM I had to remind myself how this franchise used to be so great! A lot of things I noticed in that game. The offensive line, for one thing, was huge! Not just that they were wide loads, but they seemed to look like giants. None of them really looked very athletic, but just really big and strong! I also noticed how down to business the players were. Almost like robots in sort of a way. The whole team played as if they were all on the same page. The defense was extremely physical, and the guys coming off the bench were making plays just like the starters.
Joe Gibbs made adjustments to the offense on the second series of the game. While he stuck with his game plan, which was well balanced, he mixed things up. He rolled Rypien out to avoid the pressure coming up the middle. Gibbs called Running plays to the right side and to the left side. But most importantly, Rypien had three very good receivers to pass to, two who had big days...Art Monk and Gary Clark.
Wilbur Marshall could cover receivers as well as put pressure on the QB. Kurt Gouveia intercepted passes, as well as Darrell Green. All in all, Joe Gibbs had all of his players playing championship level football. And in large part due because his GM got him the right players he needed to build a championship team. You didn't even have to be there to know all of these guys played as a team. This is something I haven't seen out of the Redskins in years.
One feeling I got from watch that game (besides a feeling of sorrow that it will be along time to see the Redskins in the Super Bowl again) is that the franchise oozed of class, toughness, and togetherness like I've never seen since that point. Football seemed to have a different feeling back then.
Anyways, don't mean to post a ramble, no point thread other than how I wish this franchise could become THAT franchise again. And if it's possible for our current front office to turn this franchise into THAT franchise again. If you guys haven't picked up the DVD of the three Super Bowl wins, you MUST pick those up and watch them!
redsk1 10-16-2009, 12:07 PM As much as those times mean to me I almost don't want to be reminded of those times. It seems like the "Hogs" just seem out of place at Fed Ex. The "Hogs" aren't here any more. Our O line is one of the worst in the NFL. It almost makes me feel bad. I don't know. I love the teams of the 80's and early 90's but they are long gone.
I want to tell DS to put away those 3 SB trophies b/c we haven't won jack since you've been here. He should stand up and tell Skins fans, "We're putting away those trophies, we respect the past, but the past is the past and we're going to get another one soon."
So, I do respect the history, but it was a long time ago. This isn't a knock on the post, it just reminded me of some feelings about the team that i have.
As JG's sais, "The past don't buy you anything."

That's odd...I was thinking of starting a thread with that topic of how Snyder should lock the SB trophies down in the basement and never touch them until he has at least won an NFC Championship trophy.
He parades those things around too much and is way too proud of them considering he had absolutely nothing to do with them.

I feel the same way. Snyder had nothing to do with earning those trophies, he should not bring them out for press conferences. He basically bought the right of of those trophies.
The Redskins should place those three trophies in a case with a BIG picture of Jack Kent Cooke, Bobby Bethard and Joe Gibbs behind the trophies.
Regarding looking back at the great Skins teams, I think it is good to look back every once in a while and remind ourselves what a good team looks like. How to distinguish between good football teams and pretenders.
When certain few of us gave dire warnings this past preseason about the sub par play of the redskins, others here got defensive and said, 'it is only preseason'. Nothing pissed me off more than the whole 'a win is a win' attitude by some here.
It is good to measure yourself against good teams, like the past great Redskins teams or the current good teams (like Giants or Saints), don't measure yourself against who you beat. That was the biggest mistake during our winning streak early last season.
Ah the glory days.
I have no problem with the trophies being on display. They belong to the franchise and can never be taken away. We should be proud of them, the glory days were some great times to be a fan. Growing up I was totally spoiled into thinking playoffs were a given every year and Super Bowls every few years were expected.
The America's Game series is great, I can watch those over and over. I admit the '91 one chokes me up a bit, knowing now that it was truly an end of an era.

You're exactly right Matty. I felt the same way about that '91 team. And what I thought was so ironic was, that team seemed to be the most dominate Redskins team Gibbs had ever assembled.
The funny thing is, when I was a senior in high school in '93, my physics teacher came into the classroom and announced to us that Joe Gibbs had retired. My first thought besides of being in shock was, "Uh oh, end of a great era". I hated the fact that I was so right. I knew things would never be the same again. Even when Gibbs came back, as optimistic as I was, something told me that it wouldn't be a repeat of the 80's. It still was much better than what we have been used to before and after Gibbs II, but it wasn't the same.
That's why for me, it is so hard to "get close" to any of the players we have currently. I guess because it is really hard to say that this player or that player is a true Redskin or a core Redskin. The only one I believe that comes close is Chris Cooley. And as much as I love watching him play, I just can't really look at our current squad and pick out the next lifetime Redskins player. I can't find the next Darrell Green or the John Riggins, Art Monk, or Jeff Bostic. The only current jerseys I have are two Clinton Portis jerseys that two different people gave me for Christmas.
It's hard for me not to live in the past. And for almost two decades now, I have tried to remain faithful and optimistic. But, this season, I think I'm finally starting to have a "fan" breakdown of sorts. It is so frustrating to have that feeling that things will never be better with this team unless something extremely major happens (like Snyder selling it to someone else who KNOWS how to own a professional football team.) Those who have followed my posts since '04 would normally accuse me of being overly optimistic, but probably not now. And you know what? That feeling completely sucks!

Short and bittersweet, wonderful way to put it.
warpaint 10-17-2009, 12:40 AM I was 10 yrs old and I still remember that night. How my team is was about to play for the world title and how my step father was a hard core dallas fan. And the feeling I got that I was going to be able to rub it in the face of all my freinds. Living in Dallas that was a big thing I still have some coke-a-cola and bud cans with the Redskins as Super Bowl Champs on it. Was that ever a good night, just cant wait for the next one. HTTR!
