Posted at 3:45 PM ET, 10/10/2009 Redskins Cut Wynn to Make Room for Punter
Renaldo Wynn's second stint with the Redskins didn't last nearly as long as his first. Signed as a free agent last March, Wynn was released by the team today to make room for punter Glenn Pakulak on the 53-man roster.
Pakulak will punt in place of injured Hunter Smith on Sunday against the Panthers. Smith injured his groin last week against Tampa Bay. Pakulak, a 29-year-old journeyman who's with his ninth NFL team, will also serve as holder on field goals and extra-point attempts.
Wynn, in his 13th season, he struggled to find a place on the roster. With plenty of talented and younger defensive linemen ahead of him on the depth chart, Wynn has not been active for any of the first four games.
Wynn, 35, previously played for Washington from 2002-06, a regular starter for the first four years. The Redskins released him and he spent a season in New Orleans and another with the New York Giants before the Redskins decided to give him a shot in the spring.
The team isn't expected to make a corresponding move to fill the empty spot on the practice squad until after Sunday's game at Carolina.
