Should Ramsey Start Against Chicago?MTK 10-11-2004, 11:23 AM Like celts32 said, starting Ramsey after the bye makes a bit more sense because he'll have the extra prep time. SkinsRock 10-11-2004, 11:57 AM The #1 problem is the O-line. The main reason for this is the loss of Jansen, especially since Brunell is a lefty. His blind-side protection is practically non-existant, hence 3 sack/fumbles taken in for TD's. So with Ramsey in there, at least we'd have our pro-bowl tackle Samuels protecting him (yeah, he hasn't been playing at a pro-bowl level the past couple years, but he's still a hell of a lot better than Jones or Brown). Plus, we've had to give them more help from TE's and backs, which we wouldn't have to do quite as much on the other side with Samuels. Also, as others have said, Ramsey can put the ball down the field. I wouldn't mind a couple INT's deep in their side of the field rather than fumbles in ours. Another thing with Ramsey is that with his strong arm, even for short passes, he can get the ball there much quicker. I don't know how many times I've seen a receiver open, but by the time the ball gets to him, the defensive player has recovered and is right there to make the stop or knock the ball away. Ramsey's quick bullets would help this, at least some of the time. Another thing others have pointed out is that the running game has sucked, and the downfield threat from Ramsey would help this. Absolutely! This is another thing on the O-line too though. I expected Gibbs to change it up a little more and not have Portis run between the tackles quite as much, but it doesn't look like he has. I also thought they would have studied what Denver did last year, and would "steal" a couple running plays from them for CP to feel more comfortable with, but it doesn't look like they have done this either. All in all, I think Gibbs will adjust, but right now they just need some kind of spark, and the easiest "quick-fix" to attempt is to put Ramsey in. A thought: Back in '81, Gibbs tried to use his version of "Air Coryell" and failed, so they went to the one-back power running game and started winning. Whereas now, with the personnel we have, the power running game isn't really working, so what about switching to a more downfield approach like the Rams and Chiefs. Just a thought... On a positive note, I was happy to see them mixing it up by putting Jacobs in there some....although I'd like to see McCants in there too. Riggo44 10-11-2004, 01:15 PM Start Ramsey!! NOW!!!! Gmanc711 10-11-2004, 01:28 PM If I'm Joe Gibbs, I go up to Brunell and say look, this is your last chance. Straight up tell him, if he dosent show some improvement against CHICAGO!! then hes done. I think he should do that. If we look like sh*t in the first half, get Ramsey in there and end this Brunell experiment, and try to win the game. Really I would just rather see Ramsey start, but if Brunell is goinjg to go, I think Gibbs should just be tell Brunell its do or die. DirtBagZ 10-11-2004, 02:07 PM Just what I feared, from today's Michael Wilbon's column in the Washington Post. I think Mark is a reflection of all of us," Coach Joe Gibbs said of Brunell's play. "We're all together on it. Our offense didn't play well. It was a very good defensive team, but we didn't play well. We haven't been playing well. We have to find a way to make things click for us." My opinion on this, Brunell will continue to be the guy, unless he as a season ending injury. For those who hope for Ramsey, I would not take any solace in the statement, "We have to find a way to make things click for us." Gibbs is going to stick with Brunell till the bitter end. MTK 10-11-2004, 02:12 PM Brunell's play is a reflection of the entire offense, he isn't the sole reason for their struggles and he isn't any more to blame than anyone else right now. Gibbs will make the switch after the bye if the offense sputters again and we lose against Chicago, bank on it. Big C 10-11-2004, 02:14 PM see, even when ramsey came in against the giants, and threw the picks, he still got us down the field, gaining big chunks of yards. we got nothing to lose anymore, so get his development started again Beemnseven 10-11-2004, 02:29 PM Ramsey, no doubt. Unfortunately it is not going to happen. Gibbs is going to stick with Brunell to the bitter end. This could be his first double digit loss season as a coach. I think this post is right on. If you remember back in the '92 season, they were having offensive problems then, too. They went through a stretch of so many games or quarters without an offensive touchdown. The whole time, everyone was calling for Mark Rypien's head -- saying he had to be benched, let someone else try it, blah, blah, blah. Gibbs stayed with Rypien the whole year. Never lost faith in him. During a Monday Night game, Al Michaels said he talked with Gibbs and asked about Rypien's performance. Gibbs responded by saying, "he's been a little bit off -- just like the rest of us." Gibbs won't pull any Spurrier QB merry-go-rounds. He'll stick with Brunell until he starts throwing INTs after INTs. And as bad as Brunell has been, he hasn't COMPLETELY screwed up by giving the ball away like we saw Ramsey do against the Giants. That's Brunell's only saving grace. Brunell has been ineffective, but Ramsey would probably be even worse. That's why you aren't seeing #11 warm up on the sidelines. Still, I would say that at this point, you might as well give it to Ramsey to see once and for all what you've got. But Gibbs won't do that. He had no problem during all those years letting rookie quarterbacks hold the clipboard for season after season before handing him the reigns. I suspect he'll follow the same pattern for Ramsey. I do think we will see a first round draft pick on QB next year. denim_monger 10-11-2004, 02:33 PM i reckon all the qb's in dc stink, time to look fer a new one next yeras Gmanc711 10-11-2004, 02:40 PM i reckon all the qb's in dc stink, time to look fer a new one next yeras Whatever. As for other posts.... REACTION! I'm with Matty, Beems when I say that its not all Brunells fault. I really hate to throw this all on his shoulders, but hes just making bad mistakes, and isnt what he used to be. I'm sorry that he's getting all the backlash, its not really desereved, but he is the only offensive player that isnt in our longterm plans. At this point, maybe Ramsey will catch lightning in a bottle and spark our offense, but really we just have to prepare him to be the guy next year. GOD I HATE SAYING NEXT YEAR AFTER WEEK 5!! Our offense has been that bad though. I say let Ramsey toss it down the feild, and hopefully complete a few at the begining of the games, so teams will respect the pass, and Portis can run. Brunell just dosent have the confidence anymore, he still has some things Ramsey dosent, but I dont think the risk is worth the reward at this point. I want to see Ramsey out there, I've cheered for Brunell all five weeks, but its over. This isnt just a quick reaction either, I've thought about this all night and all day today, and he just isnt very good anymore. I'm on a rant, so I'm out. |
