GTripp0012 08-23-2009, 12:30 AM who do you see going for campbell at the moment? think he'd be a guaranteed starter?Well, no, in this hypothetical he'd simply sign with someone who has an injury at quarterback. He's got starter potential, but he doesn't yet have starter value. In Jim Zorn's offense, he's a valuable quarterback. In a different offense, he's pretty replacable.
Think Byron Leftwich in 2007. In Jacksonville, he was a relative star. He lost a QB battle, got released, and was signed by Atlanta a week later. He was awful in Atlanta that year, but not at all because he was a bad quarterback.
In 2009, he's an NFL starting quarterback again, but he's lost the QB of future label for the rest of his career. Because of what happened in Jacksonville, he's now a journeyman. And it's not like he did anything wrong, necessarily. The team just thought Garrard was better.

fair enough, makes sense
GTripp0012 08-23-2009, 12:38 AM And that's essentially the issue here when people ask, what has Campbell ever done to deserve an unquestioned starters role. Nothing, necessarily. But lets say for argument that Tavaris Jackson was a Redskin who was competing with Campbell for the job. Would it make sense to decide two weeks from tonight that Tavaris Jackson should be the starter and Jason Campbell should be released?
What if the Jaguars, instead of giving Garrard a chance, labeled him as a "career backup" and decided, on a complete whim, that instead of going with Leftwich in the offseason, that they should trade a first round pick and a third round pick for JP Losman, who was coming off a career high in both Yards and TDs in 2006? Is that logical? You could have made an argment that Losman was a franchise quarterback and Leftwich was not (at the time), but does that make the move defensible?

Full disclosure (as not to be Solomon Wilcots): it was fourth down

So basically we agree I guess about JC. Also Zorn's future is indeed tied in with JC's. I still think Zorn should open QB up for competition, just to motivate JC anyway.

just saw that ha
90pressLead 08-23-2009, 12:51 AM Pretty happy with what I saw out of both Mason and Dorsey. I think Dorsey ultimately actually has a better shot because of his punt return abilities
Dorsey Has the potential to be a real threat on 3rd down. Sprowlesian.
diehardskin2982 08-23-2009, 01:44 AM I hope mason makes it as the 3rd running back, he has real talent

I have been bashing Mason regularly but I was pretty happy with what I saw tonight. He does not look like a 3rd stringer when he is out there with the third stringers. The thing is... do you take him over Cartwright with our "teams" struggling already? What about Dorsey, who also looked good?
Then you start thinking about those last roster spots. Who would you rather have? Mason or Mitchell? What about Mason or Wynn (or Jackson)? I hate to give Vinny props because people may go on a tirade but it seems like there are going to be some really tough roster decisions. I know it is only one game but how do you cut Mitchell at this point? I remember the lovefest for Jimmy Farris but Mitchell seems like the real deal....
